it must have been late 1989, i was riding my motorbike down bradford street in braintree when i noticed keith working on a roof. i hadnt seen keith for about 6 months as he had been travelling around isreal. i stopped my bike, took of my crash helmit and shouted up at keith " oi wanker ". keith stopped working, looked down and shouted "wa hey hello mate" and climbed down the ladder. he told me that he had only been back 2 or 3 days and was staying at anges as his dad had kicked him out. i told him that i had been going to warehouse parties in the last few months and that he should come down The Barn that friday as it was kicking down there. friday night came and keith, our friend andy and myself were standing in the queue outside the Essex Barn. various people were walking through the queue selling " E ". so as you do we bought 1 each and swallowed them. 30 mins later we were in the club waiting for the E to kick in. after another 20 mins i thought this isnt working so bought another 1 and took it. about 5 minutes later i came up on the 1st 1 and after what seemed like no time i came up on the second 1 while out on the dance floor. i looked for keith but couldnt see him at 1st then i noticed him dancing with a group of other people. he looked like he was having the time of his life! i guess he never looked back from that time on. before we knew the night had started the lights were coming on as the barn closed at about 2 am. so a load of us went back to anges to drink tea, smoke and generally try to carry the party on. the hours went past, the sun came up and people left. keith and i found ourselves in the kitchen dancing to an incredible breakbeat. almost like a modern day drum and bass beat ( lots of rim shots, snares with a fantastic high hat pattern) then the kitchen door opened and in walked mary (the live in landlady) laughing at us she asked "what are you 2 dancing to?".
"THIS TUNE!" we replied. she laughed louder "thats the clock ticking" she said "have we had a good night out lads?" it wasnt long before mary became a regular down The Barn and all the other parties we went to.
