there's a city law here that you can own but not fire a gun within the city limits.. you can't so much as fire a bb gun in city limits, otherwise it's a misdemeanor.

thus, like my story i posted above.. you could stab someone and so long as they see it as self defense or something.. then you're off.. but fire a gun at an armed burglar and you get charged and quite possibly for something more serious than his/her break & entering charge if that's the furthest they got into their attempt.

I mean, the entire planet has guns. You're more likely to be shot, hung, stoned, beheaded, suicide bombed, etc in another country than the US, and we're barbaric? lol

Everyone thought only in America when school shootings started happening in the late '90s here.. then Europe started getting them, and then Asia.. are we really that bad? lol I think it's one of those situations where people speak too soon and then in time something messed up happens in their country that completely blows the others situation out of the water.

I've actually started this thing where I make it known that while others are so arrogant to point and say "Only in America", we in America don't point and say "Only in England" or some other country.. lol

so much things I could reply to what you guys said, sad I'm a bit restricted in what I'm saying, I'm not as fluent in English as I am in French

anyway, I said I thought owning a gun is stupid, thats of course because of how I've been raised

(bokorugro) you said that how you've been raised you've been handling guns since you were 4, but I haven't been raised like this: my parents hadn't got a gun, I ain't got one, I've never even touched (a real) one, and in fact I don't think I know anybody who's got a gun
so that makes the context of the opinion a lot different

of course there isn't the same type of people here that there is somewhere else

here, where I live (in my little town), my mom does it but I don't care if I ain't locking my house's doors, my car's doors either, cause I've been in this house for 12 years, no one ever breaked and entered anything on my estate

it's been said a young woman could walk alone in the streets, the night, in Montréal (Québec's main metropolis), without any risks, which a similar woman couldn't do in a couple of metropolis of USA

so I'm asking myself, where is the need to protect myself with a gun after that? I just don't feel the need to be protected by a gun, chances I need to use it are so low, there is a lot more chance that an accident happen instead

I'm not saying everyone that gets themself a gun is irresponsible, but I think a situation like what happened here with the Texas guy is a lot more feasible

if the same situation happened to you, think about it very reasonably, do you really think that, in the pressure of the moment, everything you could do would be right? I think there is of course more chances of "oh shit! there's a thief in my house! ah, here's my gun! PANG! oh shit I killed him!" (even if you just wanted to freeze him), more than "hey you stop right now! - okay okay I'm sorry, what I done was bad"

I also think you don't propagate peace by giving the right to people to have a gun, just like you don't attract flies with vinegar

George W. Bush said he's a man of piece, but USA still is one of the biggest producers of guns in the world (if not the biggest)

if none of the men (the shooter or the stealers) had the right to own a gun, I don't think we'd be talking about these victims right now

maybe those victims didn't have guns, but I'm sure owning some (and the easiness to get a gun) helps in stealing for a lot of criminals

prove me the first statement, and maybe you're right with the second but (for being killed in a simple manner) I wouldn't be surprised if USA is worse than the average (still to prove)

and finally:
bokorugro wrote:
do criminals have rights??????
so when does someone stop having rights? is it when someone does something very bad? well in the same direction of this statement (as I don't think act removes the rights from someone), I'd give honestly more rights to someone who just wanted to steal some non-living hardware, than to someone who did hurt life (whatever how filthy that one might was)

.I.M.O.

(very sorry If I was going a bit of topic some times, I just wanted to express my point of view on the stuff related to this)
don't take anything personal, too, btw, we're just chatting

Those numbers you want are virtually impossible to actually get by civilian means. They don't just give out numbers on deaths and the way they happen. I mean you could go from site to site but they all are different on their ratios on just gun related deaths and never include things like war and terrorist actions. I guess you just have to settle on believing that someone is more likely to do all these things to you in America than somewhere else..

also, show me the populations of each of those countries, and how proportional they are to the gun killing.

Oh man, here we go again

Alright, YES it was wrong that the guy shot to kill without warning. There's no denying that. But, if a homeowner owns a gun and gives some kind of warning to the intruder, I don't see anything wrong with them shooting to maim. I mean, in the midwest (Texas especially), people really value their land. You'd have to be insane to try to rob somebody in that region. There's a certain point where you have to take into the account the stupidity of the robber/intruder/whatever.

I think it's generally the idea of the loss of life that most people outside the US think we're so crazy for doing.. let them rob you don't harm them. I mean how many untrained marksman are really going to take the time to think where they are aiming when they are in the presence of an intruder in their home. Generally you just quickly shout and then shoot if they come at you or try to get away. That's generally a matter of a split second. I get this funny image in my head of some lone texan polishing down his shotguns daily and loading them at night just waiting for an intruder.. now that's just crazy lol I've never heard of an american waiting to shoot someone other than gang members

I'm not sure how burglars are in other parts of the world but generally here they come after you first if you're in the home. Which means serious injuries or death so that there are no witnesses. When I was in high school it was the talk around school about this one fella who was robbing houses in the nude here, packed with nothing but his third leg and a nine. For something so bad and so serious it was quite a laugh.
