hey guys im having troubles with my modem im gonna just say all i know and what i've done so far.

before my old pc crashed i used the same modem and cables etc etc and i could connect to the internet on my pc using its usb cable and i'd still be able to play wii/xbox with its Ethernet cable at the same time.

it seems the usb function doesn't work on my new pc which is still a windows vista and its really annoying if i have to quit out the net when u want to play a game online, especially if u run a 24 hour internet radio. (Which is down at the moment  )

i'll give u the make of the modem here:

Motorola
SB5101E
SURFboard
Cable Modem

thats what the thing says on it and i have tried to download drivers with these instructions:

if your SURFboard Cable Modem was previously installed
(successfully or unsuccessfully), leave the USB cable
CONNECTED to the computer.
Using Windows Explorer, go to the folder containing the
downloaded driver and begin with Step 1.

If this is a new install proceed to Step 10.

1. Right click on "My Computer" and choose "Properties".

2. In the "System Properties Window", click on the
"Hardware" tab.

3. Click on the button "Device Manager".

4. Under "Network Adaptors", right click on the USB Cable
Modem and choose "Uninstall".

5. Unplug the USB cable from the cable modem.

6. Using Windows Explorer, go to the folder containing the
USB driver and double click on the "Remove.exe" icon.

7. From the "SURFboard Cable Modem USB Driver Removal"
window, click on the "Remove Driver" tab.
Note: Depending on the files found by the removal utility,
you may see errors during the removal process. This is
acceptable.

8. After the removal process is completed, "Exit" from the
"SURFboard Cable Modem USB Driver Removal" application and
plug the USB cable into the cable modem.
If the cable was not removed prior to running the "Remove"
utility, unplug it and plug it back in. Ensure the cable
modem is still powered on. The "Found New Hardware" wizard
should then initiate. Windows 2000 users jump to Step 13.

9. For Windows XP, if asked to connect to find a more
suitable driver select "No, not at this time" then click
Next. Choose "Install from a list or specific location"
and then click Next.

10. Tick the box next to "Include this location in the
search", then click Browse.

11. For Windows 2000, select "Search for a suitable driver
for my device, (recommended)" and then click Next.

12. Tick the box next to "Specify a location" then click next.

13. Browse to the folder containing your downloaded driver
and select the file "NetMotCM.inf" and click ok. Then click
next to install the driver.

14. Once installed, select "Finish". A reboot of the system
is not required.

i clicked ok once done all that and it said it couldn't be installed cuz it couldn't find the specific file needed or some shit even though the driver is in the folder.

sorry that this aint much of a good topic, i've been working on this near enough all day and i just want someone to tell me what im doing wrong and how to fix it, thanks a million i will really appreciate this

P.S i have tried turning both the modem and pc off and leaving it for 10 minutes, it works perfect with the ethernet cable but i want it to work with usb like it used to, my problem being here though is i do not have the CD that came with it anymore, although i have a folder containing the files that were on it

hmmm, i'm pretty sure you'd need the CD as copying the files over doesnt necessarily mean its going to work. i'm not all that technical mind, lol, but i remember being told that by one of my computer geek friends when i was in university.

is there anywhere you might be able to download an ISO of the cd from or perhaps search the maker of the modems install program on their website?

(sorry if this is no help or if i'm completely in the wrong  )

Nice one, did the ISO work then? I managed to get a wireless router off ebay for £8 when its RRP was £65 or something so I was pleased hehe. On the topic of consoles, I just connect my Xbox up to my laptop and go on LIVE through that. Much cheaper than buyin a wirless adapter for it and better than running a cable all the way from the dining room around the house and up to my bedroom
