Post subject:  quick question about tranfering pc files
hey guys, i'm getting a new pc pretty soon and basically its going to have the same OS as my current system (windows 7 ultimate 64bit) and i was wondering what kind of cable i'd need to tranfer files and programs between the computers to save me loading everything on to a hard drive.

i've never tranfered files over before and its never been a skill i've needed to know until now, is there just a certain type of cable you can use like a 2 way usb cable ?

Start menu -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Windows Easy Transfer

That one will show you different way to transfer, either by 2way USB, network or an external harddrive/USB flash drive.

Never used it myself though. I'm used to doing everything manually with backup on external harddrives etc :p

same here but i just dont have the space to tranfer everything that way :P

it takes a long time with usb,a very long time.how about putting your old drive in the new computer if it's compatible with your new motherboard.

well i'm going to be giving this pc to my older brother so i can't just take the hard drive from it, i've found other ways like wireless networking and using an eithernet cable (i think) those should be faster than usb.

Colin , use crossover ethernet cable , that's fast , u need to configure fixed ip addresses on both PCs , let's say 192.168.1.2 on one and 192.168.1.3 on another pc. Turn off windows firewall and make sure you r logged in with tha same user name and password on both pcs (that will save u from some troubles). Then just go to the new pc , click on Run and type \\192.168.1.2\c$ (if thats the ip of the old pc and drive letter). You should see all the files on the old one.

Or you can do what pinhead suggested , just remove the hard drive from the old pc and connect it on the new one with lets say external usb adapter or connect it directly on the motherboard (if there's suitable connector , PATA or SATA)

i'll be sure to let you's know in the WCMUT thread, i'm getting a pc from a good mate of mine, he built it last year himself and cost him 800 quid, i'm getting it for like 100 :lol:

i'll not be getting it till around december though, opened this thread because i wanted to ask in advance instead of just asking that day !

if you put the old drive in the new computer you can move the files directly then you can put it pack in your old computer and delete the content via formatting.it's the easier way.but the mother board must be compatible,i had issues recently with this..
