Musician and poet Gil Scott-Heron has died at the age of 62. He was best known for his tracks 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised' and 'The Bottle' and his work in the early 1970s was an important influence on the development of rap later in the decade.

He died in hospital in Manhattan, New York, but the cause of death has not been announced.
