Shem McCauley who was artistically known as Slacker passed away this past weekend in Bangkok, Thailand. The cause of death is not known at this point, McCauley who passed away during the weekend of January 21-22, 2012 created music under several names. Most notably Head Honcho, Ramp, and DJ Streets Ahead. The UK based artist released records on XL Recordings, Loaded Records, and Paul Oakenfold’s Perfecto Records and many more.

McCauley got his start in the UK Hip-Hop scratch scene and in 1998 founded Jukebox in the Sky, an independent record label, alongside musician and producer Simon Rogers. McCauley and Rogers remixed over 80 records during this time. The label released a steady stream of house music until it became a solo act for McCauley. Several years ago McCauley moved to Thailand in search of warmer weather and for new musical inspiration. His experiences and inspiration from Thailand can be found in McCauley’s album Start A New Life which was released in 2010.

Shem “Slacker” McCauley famously collaborated with Fatboy Slim, Carl Cox, Tim Westwood, and The Prodigy. He performed at venues around the world and was known for his singles Feel Space, Flying, Scared, Your Face, and Looky Thing. May his memory, creativity and genius live on through his work and through those he inspired.

 RIP
