Post subject:  Star Wars: Return of the Jedi - Missing Scene Revealed

Watch Luke Skywalker Become a Jedi Knight in This Deleted Star Wars Scene
14 August 2010, Matt Cherette, Gawker.TV

This is incredibly epic: a never-before-screened scene cut from Return of the Jedi in which Darth Vader tempts Luke Skywalker to join the dark side, paired with footage of Luke constructing/activating his green lightsaber and officially becoming a Jedi Knight.

As you can see, footage of Darth Vader is spliced with that of his infamous son/rival, as Luke constructs and activates his green lightsaber for the first time—effectively making him a Jedi Knight—in a cave on Tatooine (the first footage of Luke with his Jedi Knight lightsaber in the final version of the movie happens when he enters Jabba the Hutt's lair to lay the smack down during the skiff battle).

The footage was apparently screened for the first time today during the "Star Wars Celebration V" convention in Orange County, FL. And while it popped up online this afternoon (it looks to have been shot by an amateur photographer during the screening, who also will forever be embarrassed by his "Yeeeah!" exclamation), it probably won't be there for long. Luckily for you, though, the above clip will be staying put for your viewing enjoyment.

May the force be with you!

What a great dark scene. A real shame it ended on the cutting room floor...

Confirming earlier reports (see blu-ray.com, April 17), George Lucas himself announced today that the Star Wars films will be released on Blu-ray in 2011, in a six-movie box set. Speaking at the Celebration V convention in Orlando, Lucas said: "I wish I could say it was coming out this year, but it will come out next year." New, extensive special features will be featured, including documentaries, vintage behind-the-scenes moments, interviews, retrospectives and never-before-seen footage from the Lucasfilm archives.

One of those special features, a deleted scene from Return of the Jedi, premiered at the convention. In it, Luke Skywalker is seen asembling his new lightsaber before going to the palace of Jabba the Hutt.

Fall 2011...Octoberish

Quote:
"Blu-ray is the absolute best way to experience Star Wars at home – in pristine high definition," said George Lucas. "The films have never looked or sounded better."

In an interview with the New York Times, Lucas said that the saga hadn't been announced before because he was waiting for mass adoption of the Blu-ray format. "We've been wanting to do it as soon as we possibly could, but we just wanted to do it when enough people would be able to buy it and see it," said the filmmaker.

Lucas also clarified that the original trilogy movies will be included as they were shown theatrically in 1997 and released on DVD in 2004 - i.e., the original versions will not be included. "You have to go through and do a whole restoration on it, and you have to do that digitally," he said. "It's a very, very expensive process to do it. So when we did the transfer to digital, we only transferred really the upgraded version."

Nobody's forcing you to buy nor watch the prequels. Just stick to the original Star Wars trilogy. I know I will.

Why did the crowd go so mental over like 30 seconds of new footage?

And anyway, lucas is just milking this release again, its pretty much the dvd release upscaled onto blu-ray, money making cunt

Because a) it's a very dark and cool unseen scene from an original Star Wars trilogy movie b) it features Darth Vader and light saber building Luke who turns into a Jedi right before their eyes and c) they're movie geeks.

Agree on the cunt part. These days...

The day I get excited about something like this is the day I want someone to shoot me. Seriously, I mean come on?

That's like a big massive piece of bait he's planted now though. Star Wars geeks will buy the product in it's droves! Capitalist cunts.

Oh where you on Brainkiller at the time when some parts of new tracks were spoiled? Yes, people can go mental over 30 seconds of new material.

I was a huge fan of the original trilogy as kid and I dig the scene. It's another thing to go bonkers over it like the geeks at the Star Wars convention though...
