What's Europe's version of the US's NPD? With the NPD it has a complete breakdown of consoles sold along with games and all that with spot on numbers, not rounded numbers like the Chart Track thing gives. Don't know about other services but Chart-Track for example is not free of charge. You need to pay to get more detailed numbers than those published in the media. But imho 165.000 is an accurate enough number and more easy to remember than say 164.987..
I prefer accuracy over ease.

But isnt the normal drop in people buying the consoles a week/month (whatever) after launch down to the fact that places have sold out of their launch allocation and are waiting to be re-supplied?? I know that was the case for the PS2, 360, Wii (and prob the PSP and DS but i dont follow handhelds) but with the PS3 you can still walk into any gaming shop and pick one up, i seriously doubt that Sony has had to resupply any shops yet

Nearly 800.000 PS3 units sold in Europe, says Stringer
Ellie Gibson 11:41 (BST) 17/04/2007
But battle isn't over yet
Sony CEO Howard Stringer has declared the European launch of PlayStation 3 a success, with almost 800,000 units already sold in the region.
Speaking to the Financial Times Stringer said, "I think [in] the first two days in the UK, GBP 100m (USD 199m) revenue changed hands and that's probably the largest consumer electronics sale in history."
According to Stringer, Europe has not experienced "the perception wars" which occurred in Japan. He observed that the console launched here with more games for consumers to choose from, adding, "Perhaps we lived up to the expectations in Europe in a way that perhaps we didn't in Japan".
As reported earlier this week, Sony's finances are set to improve following higher sales of LCD TVs and an upturn in the performance of the games division. The company has raised its forecast for full-year operating income from YEN 10 billion to YEN 60 billion (GBP 250 million).
But Stringer said the battle is not yet over: "The silo walls are down - we're staring across the walls at each other but we haven't quite shaken hands all the way around."

It's good PR. The word will spread and Play.com gets new clients. I doubt the price will stay that low forever though.
Some other online retailer did the same thing but it was also for a limited period and was purely a PR trick.

Public Relations? I think not. Thats called a sale because they want to MOVE those PS3 units.

Agree. The price suggests to me that they aren't selling as many as they expected to. Play.com don't exactly struggle for customers.
The only person I know with a PS3 bought it in Hong Kong around 6 months ago. He bought another one to sell when he got back to the UK. He couldn't find a single buyer and he was trying to sell it for the not unreasonable £400. However good a PS3 is it's just too expensive for a lot of people to justify buying. Not many people desparately want a Blue Ray DVD player yet. Like any console, it's not the machine but the games that matter. It's still early days for the PS3 though.

PS3's are selling like crazy all over. Their dropping the 20GB version for the states and soley selling the 60GB version due to consumers willing and wanting to spend that 100 dollars extra for a decked out version. They're also dropping the price, how much isn't certain yet, but they are going to drop it so that it's even more accessible to those who were going to get a 20GB version. So far every week my city continues to sell out of PS3's and Wii's

I read about an online retailer that dropped the price of the PS3 solely for PR reasons. Was merely speculating about Play.com. I'm sure they don't have shoratge of clients but this does not mean that they're not after new clients 24/7.
There's no troubles of moving PS3 units in Europe and what I read about the situation in the US, PS3 was the only console that managed to grow it sales during the past week or so.
The demand for PS3s in Europe though is so high however that most of the production capacity of PS3 is already used for supplying the European market. This is expected to cause shortages of the console in the US.

I'm not trying to be rude but you really should cite your sources.

So far the price change information has been quite known. Spreading into the news channels even on national tv.
I think sales on xbox will pick up around my area once the elite arrives here. It's all down to alot of common sense, why by something when there's a better model you can afford on it's way soon?
The Wii has been the real winner as of late, around here you can't find one without preordering and at one store people's preorders were sold to other customers if they didnt pick it up by 6pm the day of their pick up date. A friend I went to high school with sold 5 preordered Wii's to walk in customers this week alone. That may not seem like much but considering all the places you're able to buy one here it shows a growing interest in Wii right now.

"Euro PS3 launch causing stock issues in US, says Sony" & "PS3 was the only next-gen console to see sales rise over the course of the month, SCEA said"

I don't remember however wich retailer it was that sold PS3 for cheap for PR reasons. I think it was around the time of the US launch? Tried to find the news story but with so many PS3 price related stories on the net it proved extremely difficult.

100 USD off PS3's price by October?
According to the rumours "Sony could knock 100 USD off the console's retail price by October this year, in order for the PS3 to better combat the Xbox 360 Elite"
