hey guys this is a sort of extension to the other thread i opened about the older generation of gaming.

some of this wont apply to people who never played things before ps2 or xbox etc.

i've noticed this myself, and i'll use SNES as my example.

some games for the snes were short compared to games of now adays but i think back in those days they were a hell lot harder and more challenging or even more rewarding than the games of today are.

what do you think ?

where they harder in the old days ?

or are they just as hard/harder of today games ?

I think back then most games were hard but challenging, while modern day's "hard" games are unplayable.

Still for some reason old games had alot of replay value, you could play them over and over again without getting bored of it, while modern games I rarely feel like replaying one of them

It's an interesting thought, although I think games of today can be hard, just in different ways.

Back in the day, it was all about pixel accuracy. With practice, you could tell exactly where you could stand on an edge where Mario wouldn't fall. Games of today are all 3D (the future of gaming!*sarcasm*). Everything is pretty nebulous and you just can't master that kind of accuracy in a 3D space (hell, I still trip in real life, even though I've had 22 years of walking experience in this 3D space). This is why I, unlike the gaming industry, do not view 2D gaming as an "old" style of gaming. It's just different.

I think that's what made 2D games so much more rewarding - you really could master them. They were hard, so it took some doing to master them. 3D games have complex physics, which can be difficult in a completely different way.

I think the todays games that are more like interactive movies are more easier than games from the games of old. Where in these types of games you always have some sort of direction or something leading you through the game point to point.

But on the other hand I think strategy based and turn based games can be crazily hard where you gotta plan ahead or really, really think hard to work out how to get through. Them games can sometimes do ya head in.

So... some games have gotten harder and some games have gotten easier. It's like the Metal Gear Solid series, which I love and am crazy about. (currently tryin to track down Portable ops for the PSP for Big Bosses second adventure) these games are more like interactive movies, and yeh I know, bump up the difficulty and its insanely hard to not get noticed. So now I don't know. Was just about to say them games are not hard. fuk i dunno.

The first time I played them:

I finished Call of Duty 4 in about 4 hours.

I finished Gears of War in about 6 hours.

I finished Condemned in about 7 hours.

I'm trying to finish fucking Donkey Kong Country 2 on the SNES because I didn't as a kid but I get my ass kicked in the last few levels. Played for 10 hours, still busy.

Same with Mario games, etc etc. Blast Corps is over 11 years ago, very fucking hard. Just played it but daaaamn, I can't believe I finished it back in that day.

A sidesnote: Zelda - Twilight Princess is VERY easy compared to Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time. I prefer the older ones because they are a challenge! Now I have to skip all the heartcontainers in Twilight Princess to make it hard... (and it's still easy)

Answer, yes. New games are easier. For me at least.
