Just curious about this, the gamers that visit here usually enjoy a wide variety of games and the MMO falls into one of them, and you always hear stories about addiction and shit, mostly with WoW, has anyone ever had a stage of their life when they've been addicted to an MMO ?
might be a touchy subject but i can only see the reason of getting hooked to this is because of the quality or the interaction and the fact that mmo's are the only games you really fully interact with other players.
it began for me at around 2004, this 32 bit looking game called Mystic Worlds, its actually hard to remember alot of this game because it was for me a long time a go, i can remember being up till 7 am the first night i played it, to me it was the first of its kind and i never really noticed anything wrong with playing it so much, i think now a days the MMO is something wide spread, you can get it if you want it no problem but back then it was rather hard to find a free MMORPG, to be honest i'd love to go back to Mystic Worlds and see how things have changed but it was down within a year or two and now a days its been replaced by a newer MMO also called Mystic Worlds but its actually an entire different game by different people.
i've had 2 cases of being into mmorpgs and to be honest i'd not say its an addiction, i'm a gamer and i've lots of games and i play a huge amount of different styles of games, it was something i was brought up with mario was part of the family like i was back years ago.
The second MMORPG i was rather hooked to was called Endless Online, its actually still going today, unfortunatly it like Mystic Worlds will meet its end one day if it hasn't already, its basically just kept on life support now a days, the admins gave up, hackers came in and hacked the game with gold glitches and what not, back when i played it 2 million gold got you an armor called Baru which is the ultimate armor in that game, but i just went on for a laugh one time recently and seen that they now cost 50 billion gold due to gold glitching and what not.
i think the reason i've been attatched to these kind of games is because unlike console games they will be unplayable in the future, i said earlier this week about me getting into Chrono Trigger, which came out in 1995 i believe, when its 15 years after Endless Online it wont be there, you wont be able to play it and the magic will have gone.
thats just my experience with MMO's and it might make me sound a bit like a geek but i'm sure every gamer who is curious about new genre's of gaming have tried them out, and the so called "addiction" is no more than paying your Xbox Live Gold Subscription every year, i've played WoW and Eve online, wow is a bit shit now a days, looks heavily dated, but i see potential for Eve online because its a totally Different kind of MMO it doesn't just have a level system, its split into loads of catagories, but its so fucking expensive i Can't get addicted to it
so what about anyone else ? care to share your stories ? and perhaps maybe even Recommend an MMO, Free Or Not

I've always had an interest in MMO's, but it's already hard enough as it is to get time to play the games that are new and also catch up on some of the ones I've missed throughout the years. I kinda get the feeling that if I was to properly get into a MMO that I'd have to stop playing some of the other things I really like playing. So I've sort of avoiding them to be honest.
I know that some people get pretty full on hardcore about MMO's, like I remember a story about some dude in China who died after playing one for a few days non stop without sleep and drinking a shit load of energy drinks... or something like that, can't remember fully as it was a while ago.
I'll get into one eventually, just wish I had more time!

yeah, i've heard about that story too !
and at the times of playing these two mmo's that i was into, my life wasn't nearly as good as it is now, and i had alot of time on my hands and i was younger, never had a girlfreind or shit you know, maybe thats how it all starts.
there are some pretty good mmo's, people do take it too seriously like recently a boy in america stole credit card details and then when police came to his house they found his mom and dad were growing weed, real big fuck up there.
you dont need to play them everyday, and from my experience, as long as you've still got good games you like to play you'll never turn away good normal games in the end, the quality of mmo's now a days are pretty bleak (look at the ad's at the bottom of this topic) i think anyway, when the first free mmorpg's came on the scene, that was the shit and everyone i knew who played them never got into the paid one WoW because they had the same experience with the free ones.
i think the reason i played those two loads was because i was younger, had alot less money so couldn't buy games every week, more like every few months and because i wasn't very happy with my Real life back then, being in foster care with a selfless fat greedy bitch of a foster mother were probably the reasons i was into the mmo's back then, they worked really well as a means of escapism
but now a days i see them as a little adventure, like a good rpg to be honest, and i'm a sucker for them, i doubt i'll ever get addicted to one again unless my life suddenly crashes down to the gutter, now a days there just another game like the rest on my shelves

i have always loved gaming and rpg's (my first pc was 8bit zx spectrum, i used to play games all the time on it), now i'm studying 'games and simulations technology' and i want to produce games in future but i have never liked mmo games. i tried may of them, including WoW but had never kept on playing for more than two days in any, just not my cup of tea.
however i'm a little bir excited about star wars: the old republic cause i loved games form 'knights of the old repulic' series and its made by bioware - they have never disappointed me yet.

Im a MMORPG'er! Love em'.
Been playing Bounty Bay Online for the past 2 years. Been hooked since I 1st played the game. Its a pirate game sorta but its cool. Loads to do and loads of people to PK. Takes a while to level weapons if your a 1st timer on there after that though most of the weaps you can just afk in a non PVP area (as there is a bug players use to PK ya and take all your items) But other than that its fun working out what levels you need to wear certain armour and the sea battles are cool. Not only that I loved sitting down on a Saturday night ready for a seige on London with my old guild Ghost Fleet. Was funny seeing all the players ships in Offshore waiting for the other guild that was seiging. And as well I met my partner on the game. Funny enough when I joined BBO the 1st guild I joined my partner was in. When I left that guild and went to another he was in that too... Then eventually the guild disbanded everyone went into diff guilds again and we ended up in the same guild again!! Weirdly enough though we didnt speak to each other in them guilds at all! Was only till I joined Ghost Fleet ( 6 months since I 1st started the game) That we started talking
I think it was Fate lmao!
Anyhoo.... I play Guild Wars too. Thats a damn good game.
Love how you can mess about with the builds and create one that kicks ass. Not only that the graphics are immense! Cant wait till GW2 comes out!
I did however try another game online Battle of the Immortals. It was ok... bit like GW... But in the end I uninstalled the game I didnt like it too much...
