Universal confirms that it will be able to track down the MP3s on peer-to-peer networks using these watermarks, although the company's MP3 experiment will not make use of unique identifiers that would allow record labels to see which user purchased the files.

However, the strategy of tracking users -- those who illicitly trade songs and those who don't -- through digital watermarks is still on the labels' radar.

For a fucking behemoth like Universal, putting a user-tracking strategy into effect is quite an undertaking. But for a small start-up lable like Take Me To The Hospital/ Ragged Flag this will be quicker and easier.

Wired Magazine wrote:
A number identifying every unique music file sold worldwide could be added using Activated Content's watermark, which crams 4 bits of watermarked data into each second of a compressed music file. If one were to play a song over speakers and rerecord it, those bits would remain intact, according to Hill.

Most of the company's current customers use its watermarks to stop music writers from leaking advance promotional copies onto the internet. That system uses a 32-bit watermark, which, according to Hill, can render 4.2 billion unique IDs -- far greater than the number of music reviewers in the world.

Unique watermarks would allow labels to hunt down and sue alleged copyright infringers with vastly increased efficiency, even if the file was copied from their computer without their knowledge. Hill calls the possibility a "privacy nightmare."

A privacy nightmare... I don't like the sound of them apples...

this isn't new btw, its been going on for the last few years at least.

Not every artist/label does it though.

But there have been people nailed [sued, fucked, etc] for leaking new, promo material.

It's easy!

Anyone who's got the promo can rip it and leak it. When confronted by the TMTTH laywers they can claim that the cd was stolen (that's bound to happen all the time at radio stations).

If it's a big radiostation I doubt they will report it to the police and interrogate 100s of employees.

Apparently that doesn't stand up and whoever it's sent to still gets f***ed.

I meant more in the way of removing the watermark :!:

screw that, why not play the CD, line out from headphones or RCA (red & white cables) out while recording it directly into a computer with programs like Sound Forge and you should get decent quality.

I'd say pleade stupidity: "Uhmm...I guess someone stole the cd..."

Dumbfucks that don't know shit about these kind of things probably get the promo. And I recently heard that watermarked promos have marks in the music itself to indetify which promo actually leaked. It will be very hard to come up with something... but still, I don't think it will take very long for a rip of a release disk, or someone finally just takes the step of leaking the promo. I hope...

What is needed is someone that really know this shit. He or she needs to run the entire cd through some kind of audio software (watermark identifying software or something), identify all the watermarks and remove them. Then encode all the tracks to mp3 and send them our way.

Bullshit, impossible!
It would be posible if each promo would have audible changes like adding few dbs to a certain layer of the track, but in case of modified bits it all gets deformed via speakers.
