Websheriff, is there a way that a remix of a band copyrighted under Warner Music Group (or any other labels) can legally be put onto youtube? Just asking because I got a Muse remix taken off recently and would like to know how to stop it from happening in the future. Personally, I don't see why it was taken off in the first place because it was only sections of the acapella that I used in the remix.

In answer to your query, some labels now have deals with YT which allow their vidz / trax to be used (subject to the uploader agreeing that ads may be included with these videos and subject to the label in question then sharing the ad revenue with YT) ... .. this is then also subject to the artist's say-so - as, after all, it is their music at the end of the day ... .. many / most labels and artists do not have deal with YT, however, so it then becomes hit-and-miss as to how these labels and artists view their rights ... .. some artists will be chilled-out about people using their masters or videos withhout direct permission or payment (eg. Radiohead) and others will be less so (eg. Prince) ... .. bearing-in-mind that YT do NOT pay artists or writers public performance / broadcast royalties (which are paid by radio and, in turn, general TV stations and then MTV type stations) although, one-day, YT shall follow in the footsteps of radio and TV and end-up paying royalties properly for their business use of other people's music ... .. the last category are companies / artists are those that currently do not allow the use of their audio / video on YT by 'third parties' (largely because they are not being paid performance royalties).

'Sorry' that the picture is so hit-and-miss, but this is simply the way it is at the moment and, ultimately, reflects both the state-of-flux in the relationship between YT and the labels / rights owners / artists and, of course, the fact that it's any artist's right to decide what to do with their own music ... .. as for Warners and as you'll know, they've currently fallen-out with YT over the terms of their re-negotiations to extend their deal with YT and, for now, are pulling all of their videos - so, if you post a vid with Warners' content in it, it's highly likely to get caught in the crossfire !!

Anyway, hope the above helps (a bit).
