Here's one for all you talented synth heads out there...

Don't suppose anyone knows what synth the Chems used to create the lead line from 'Hey Boy Hey Girl' (the plucky one that sounds like its been programmed in a step sequencer).
Or can someone give me a detailed step by step on how to re-create the sound (as close as possible to the original) using a virtual synth plugin/or Reason?

Thanks

the whole riff would be great, thanks mooze (even though the sequence is only 2 beats of a bar).
Ive heard quite a few remixes where people have tried to re-create it but never got it quite right. From hearing ur own music I think its safe to say u have quite a strong knowledge of synthesis, looking forward to hearing your results

Soundwise yeah, its pretty much perfect, but I swear there's some hidden 'ghost' notes in the original sequence, u know what i mean?

Tryin to find a live version where u might be able to hear what i mean a bit better

Thanks for ur effort btw

you sure? i think this was the only notes in the riff. But remember that this riff is gonna sound kinda dry and simple alone.. when you ad a bassline and drums, maybe some more synths, then the riff sounds more fat and tight.

i cant hear any ghostnote in there. but maybe i am wrong :)

Might just be the delay, its weird, there's definitely something camouflaged behind them main notes that youve sequenced, u know on the old tb303 where the sequences where certain notes have more of an accent? It sounds sorta like that

Also, slightly off topic, what prodigy tune have i heard that sound from the x-files episode Deep Throat? Can't quite put my finger on it... http://www.watch-thexfiles-online.com/W ... hroat.html 35:42 secs into the episode

as you say, probably just some delay or something like that.

here you have the reasonfile: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?yzj0tzzgicw

so you can play around with the riff yourself.. :)

There is a midi of the track floating around that sounds awful! But whoever done it sequenced the main synth as this...

http://www.sendspace.com/file/chfx7t

Dunno how that'd sound through ur sound that you put together, could just be the delay creating the effect of there being more notes to the sequence.

I dunno, some of them 'ghost notes' in the sequence kind of sound like when u play a monophonic synth n you hold down a note n keeping it pressed play another note its like it jumps to the higher note but without the same attack or sound as playing it pizzicato style (like the main notes that stand out in the Hey Boy Hey Girl sequence)

Gettin really technical now :? Does the above bit make sense?

Done a little bit of playing about with it, used the sequence from the midi file i found n played with the note velocities which affect the filter cut off on them.
What you reckon on it?

2:25 in, sounds the closest to the original sequence to me
Pretty cool remix as well!

Posted the question on the official Chems forum n got a reply from Tom (THEE Tom?)...

"hi mls and biff, the riff was originally written on an arp step sequencer controlling an arp 2600.it sounds like the notes are accented but infact the seq is just triggering one of the 2600 vco whilst the second vco is just droning with no pitch cv or gate at a lower volume....we use the juno 106 to play it live as the 2600 would not tour so well .it doesnt quite sound the same but it will do!!good luck with your recreation!cheers tom"

Had a go at tryin to programme it on the Arturia ARP2600v plugin, got the main part sequenced through VCO1 and the droning part that Tom was on about through VCO2 but I'm kinda stuck as to what to do next, at the moment its playing both of them polyphonicly but Im sure that the main part should be playing but the droning part should only be cutting in on certain notes that the main part shouldn't be playing. Here's the Arturia ARP2600 Preset and save file of where I'm at so far...
http://www.sendspace.com/file/943vb8
(bare in mind u have to hold down the D3 key to hear the sequence)

For anyone who knows how an ARP2600 works, what on earth do i do next, I'm assuming both VCO's should be wired up to something else next, but what?

And yeah! first ever post on the chems forum n i get a reply from Tom! That is pretty kool, Liam on the other hand, I couldn't see him doing that, he's prob far too protective of his production secrets than to share tips on forums
