At Long Last, PS3 Finally Ready To Rumble
2007-03-03 03:13 by Billy Brown

The one feature that PS3 has been sorely lacking compared to PlayStation 2 is the rumble feature. Since Immersion and Sony have been in patent litigation for eons, consumers have gotten the short end of the stick...until now.

Immersion and Sony have settled and is "very excited about our new partnership with Immersion and the potential for new and innovative products incorporating their technologies."

Details from the agreement follow.

Immersion Corporation, a leading developer and licensor of touch feedback technology, and Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) today announced the companies have agreed to conclude their patent litigation at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and have entered into a new business agreement to explore the inclusion of Immersion technology in PlayStation format products.

"We are pleased to have put this litigation behind us," said Immersion CEO Victor Viegas. "Our new business agreement with Sony Computer Entertainment is specifically intended to enable advanced vibration capability for the benefit of the PlayStation gaming community. We are happy to provide our technology in this regard and hope to make technical proposals very soon with respect to use of our technology in the PlayStation products."

Immersion will receive the amount of the judgment entered by the District Court, which includes damages, pre-judgment interest, costs, and interest, in addition to retaining compulsory license fees ordered by the District Court which were already paid. Terms of the business agreement between the parties provide SCE with certain new rights with respect to Immersion's patent portfolio. Additional financial terms are not being disclosed. The conclusion of this litigation and the agreement will have no material impact on Sony's consolidated earnings forecast announced on January 30, 2007.

"We look forward to exploring with Immersion exciting new ways to bring the largest and best range of gameplay experiences to our customers," said Kazuo Hirai, President and Group Chief Operating Officer, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "We are very excited about our new partnership with Immersion and the potential for new and innovative products incorporating their technologies."

I guess it depends on when you'll be buying it. Immersion has stated that it has the know-how to mix Sony's SixAxis motion sensing technology with force feedback. I presume it won't be taking that long though before Sony releases a new "dual shock" version of the PS3 SixAxis controller. My own guess is they'll be bringing it to stores, in box and separate, around xmas time.

Immersion can fix it alright. They've been saying that ever since they heard the news of Sony dropping rumble feature in favour of SixAxis motion sensing technology last year.

God I hate Sony sometimes.... sorry guys :?

What irritates me is the big mouth of Sony.... saying they'll kick
Nintendo and Microsoft out of the "leaugue to be the greatest console"
or whatever, but numbers don't lie.

I personally don't think this will attract new customers.

"Oh it has a rumble function now, now I'm definitely going to buy it"

The rumble feature while it's a plus is not really a decisive buying factor. The most important factor in the console war is the fact that there's a massive base of loyal Sony Playstation users who'll be all buying PS3 when they eventually go next gen. And say what you want but of the three next gen consoles (not that Wii actually is next gen) available PS3 is the most advanced. There's just not that many great games available for it yet wich is normal around launch time. But that will of course change gradually and the price will drop too. Everyone in the game industry knows that Sony will once again win the console war. Not by such a big margin as with Playstation 2 however but still.

Numbers don't lie? PS3 hasn't even been out 6 months yet as compared to the 360 which has been out what.. a year now? Numbers are for stock brokers, buy what you like. I could care less if PS3 sold only 10 copies or 10,000,000. I want one either way.

It's not about what the 360 numbers are but the wii's. Since the PS3 and the Wii have been released Ninetendo has taken PS3 to the bank. The PS3 expected its name to sell its consol and it really hasnt been all that successful as it is drastically overpriced and the game titles just arent there yet. To be completely honest I've see the PS3 readily available at retail stores since mid-january. As for the wii i have yet to see even 1 available console.

and how is the ps3 more advanced? everything in that system is stolen from other consoles. the six axis from the wii (which they made fun of nintendo for before deciding to use it in its own console) they took the Xbox button from obviously XBOX and now there taking the achievements from XBOX as well...the entire console is born off of stolen ideas. on top of that every time i play the thing even on an HD tv it doesnt look as good as my 360. Obviously though only time can tell with the graphics as bigger and better games come about for both systems.

Everyone in the game industry? Maybe the people still working for sony! its gonna be hard getting people to purchase the ps3 when sony itself has said they want the ps4 out by 2010

I know the whole thing i just threw out there sounds really fanboyish...but im gonna be honest i wanted a PS3. I had a PS2 and i loved the thing. but when i found out the price and realized that most of the good games for the PS3 would be on both consoles the thought of dropping $600 on that thing went right out of my mind. And don't even use the Blu-Ray Argument. Just for your information Sony has backed some gems in the years past. i.e.
Beta Max lost to VHS
Hi 8 lost to Mini DV
A-Track just failed
Mini Disk just failed also...its been years since any format that was sonys has made it. and the fact that Blu-ray wont allow the porn industry to make any blu-ray dvds isnt helping it (this is quite recent for those who havent heard) also for those who didnt know it was the porn industry which helped VHS win the format war in the 80's

That's the differences of regions I guess. I've seen a Wii at every store since its day of release. I've only seen 1 PS3 since the day of it's release and it sold before I left the store. Haven't seen one anywhere I've been in the region. Still see plenty of 360 and Wii's.

I think just about every console has borrowed/stolen something from another. The stats don't lie though, even in numbers the PS3 is higher in definition. The 360 goes up to 1080i, PS3 up to 1080p. Doesn't make much sense to some but it's more.

The blu ray issue is just a battle of hd quality between formats. it's honestly not struggling at this point in time. i'm really not bothered about the porn industry not having blu ray discs out.. people download it on the computer anyway. dvds and blu ray will be obsolete soon enough as it is.

in the end i want a Wii and a PS3, both of which look great and have games I want to play. I only ever hear xbox users go on about how it's the champion, it's like listening to any fanboy of a system go on about how their system is the best. that shit is just annoying already. just enjoy the games and move on already. 8-)

And on that note, let's keep this thread on the PS3 controller. No more xbox, wii, or anything else. Enough hijacking threads.

not from what i saw, but that's for another thread. time to clean house in this section. i've grown a bit weary going into an xbox, ps, wii, or any other thread and watch fans of the competitors come in and hijack the thread about how much better their systems are. i'm done with that. i'm not trying to be a dick to anyone we're all gamers and i love that, but it's really not that hard to stay on topic. within the first 10 posts of this thread about reintroducing the shock into a ps controller we've already got xbox and wii into this and it's pointless rambling
