Theres a dodgy looking Charly CD promo on ebay, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0565363483

Image

Personally i think this is a fake, its a genuine cd but it looks like the 'For Promotional Use Only' has simply been printed onto the cd.
The lettering looks cheap and anyone with a cd printer could do this.

Also, ive got CD promo's of Everybody In The Place, Wind It Up and Fire. They do NOT have the words 'For Promotional Use Only' on the cd, they have a promo sticker on the standard cd case.

What do you think? Fake or real???

definitely fake you can tell the "for promotional use only" stamping on cds is thermal via thermal printer / LightScribe and thermal technology wasnt invented till 2004 By HP. Then LightScribe CD-Rs Became a Cheaper alternative for the companies to promote their bands via CD-r Promo CDs with LightScribe Thermal Printed Labels. heres a direct quote from WIKIPEDIA

"LightScribe was conceived by Hewlett-Packard engineer Daryl Anderson, and the coatings chemistry was developed by Dr. Makarand Gore, [1] and brought to market through the joint design efforts of HP's imaging and optical storage divisions in 2004.[2][3] Anderson is no longer actively associated with Lightscribe.

It was the first direct to disc labeling technology that allowed users to laser etch images to the label side of a disc. DiscT@2 technology had been on the market since 2002, but DiscT@2 allowed users to burn to the unused portion of the data side of the disc. In 2005, LabelFlash became the main competitor for LightScribe."

if you still have doubts google search LightScribe ... i feel bad for the poor bastard whos about to get ripped off for 55GBP ( thats what the highest bid is at now )

just playin devils advocate here...could you line up that precisely the promo printing on a cd that already has printing on it?

who is to say that that is not how they did it back in 94...print promo on a retail cd...remember the white label cds that xl was putting out for tlts...that looked very homemade

i am not saying i know either way...just some food for discussion

maybe i didnt make this very clear... how should i put this , its a 1991 promo cd with a thermal printing technology that wasnt availabe till 2004 once again , THERE WAS NO THERMAL PRINTING ON CD'S IN 1991 ! im 100% sure its fake , i even went as far as emailing XL Recordings to see if they can confirm the existance of the cd , im still waiting for a reply. here is some food for thought for you bokorugro , look at the difference in the texture of the song titles and the " for promotional use only " the song titles are nice and solid black which means they were screen printed on the cd with ink , the "for promotional use" is dull and does not match the other font its also slightly pixelated if you look closely that means its thermal printed , when it comes to fakes and bootlegs i know my shit , trust me its a fake , he would have gotten way better results with a silkscreen and a can of glossy black spraypaint lol... btw bokorugro is it you whos selling this cd :P lol ??????

yeah i'm looking at the bigger image, i can see the pixels, and i mean this is when i was fucking born man, that's a long time for something of that technology to be kicking about, my say is that its fake also.

i'm not as good spotting promo's as you guys are but from what i see only the "For Promotional Use Only" is pixelated but the rest of the cd print isn't pixelated, its like the guy purchased a normal cd and stuck the promo bit on it with a printer, is that even possible ?

also the number on it is XLS 21CD which is the same as the cd release, so i think i could be right on this one.

promo's usually have a letter in there to let u know its a promo, i really think the guy went and just printed the promo words on a charly cd, would have been easier to do than mimic the whole cd itself

Seller also says:
Quote:
This promo CD is very rare and IMPOSSIBLE to find

Impossible to find because its fake.

i reported the item, someone obviously thinks its real and 55 quid is alot for a normal charly release cd with fake shit printed on it, i think if a couple more people on here reports it, it will get pulled from the listing.

has anyone noticed how none of the cds come with cd cases and inlays ? usualy promo cds from these companies from that time period would come with cover inserts that would back up the fact that these were promos , all of his cds come in generic white paper sleves :) some one should mail him and ask him what thermal printer he uses to print the promo stamps on his cds LOL
