+ infinity

Best movies amongst the horror genre (in my opinion) are probably the early 3 Dead movies from Romero, the early Sam Raimi movies (Evil Dead 1 + 2) and the early Peter Jackson movies (Dead Alive and Bad Taste). Furthermore I'd also say the Re-Animator movies (all 3 parts, can't wait to see the coming 4th part). I also love 28 days/weeks later, Dog soldiers, American werewolf in London, Hellraiser 1,2,3.
Not really horror but still pretty bloody and funny is Story of Ricky. Some of the gore movies by Andreas Schnaas (Violent Shit / Anthropophagous 2000 ) and Jörg Buttgereit (Nekromantik/Corpse fucking art) are also movies to take into concideration.

No ghosts however.

Question :

Is Silent Hill classed as a horror?
If so Silent Hill and the Blair Witch Project - both films are just mental.

John Carpenter's The Thing and Halloween, Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, The Shining, even the original Alien film works quite well as a horror.
