Hi, just a quick question, does anyone know whether Liam sampled the 'live drum' part used in the intro to Out Of Space when they play it live?

Thanks

These are no sampled drums - it´s played Live by Leo, Kieron, etc.

27 secs into this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_cRsWQWsdM

Its definitely a drum loop that Liams programmed, Leo plays over the top of it but you can barely hear him in the live version above. I'm not saying that Liams lazy and all his beats are from samples n loops but I could definitely see him sampling this beat, choppin it up n re-programming it into what it is as apose to recording it himself. I might be wrong though.

There's gotta be a sample, cause the intro beats are not included on the official 2005 live version on Experience Expanded 2008. It's been cut.

Nah, it´s not sampled, it´s re-arranged for the cd I must admit, but look here at this lowlands-clip from 2005: Kieron definetly plays this :

Hes definetly playing along with a loop. listen to how fast the bass drum is rolled off- kieron isnt doing that.

At the Chicago gig last year, the audience quieted down a bit as these intro beats started, it was definetly a loop playing, chopped up a bit. Leo (trying to be funny) Pretended to play them on his drums, as keef and maxim stood by, acting like they were really into it.

so.. id say that answers the question :D

Leo certainly plays OVER the drum loop. I'm sure keef and maxim really do get into it. The audience only get to hear the top section of the drums leo plays, so the drums Liam plays at the same time don't sound shitty. but leo still plays the bottom parts which maxim and keef hear loudly.

Here's an example of that:

The drums are very easily heard from the stage, which im sure keef gets a kick out of when hes jumping around

*cough* ... usually on a drum set a bassdrum is played by feet and you cannot see kieron playin this but if you look closer you will see he is movin is legs along wuth the bassdrum.

In case of the TMTTH Video the drums were just additional played by leo
, but it shouldn´t pretend there is someone who plays ALL the drums on this track.... that would be impossible.

Also the question was about the Intro drums of OOS, not of other tracks.

A good example for added drums was the track WARNING. A lot of people missed these added drum on the album vesrion, along with the vocals.

if you want to exactly hear what is leo playing listen to their law from amsterdam 2010 where soundsystem has blown, after the fuck-up (3:43) only leo's drums are audible

(little offtopic we went, didnt we?)

Well off topic, no ones doubting Leos drumming abilities, I know for a fact he's a shithot drummer BUT he does play over the top of the beats, mainly to give the songs more punch live. I can't remember where but I remember reading something with Liam where he was talking about them live n why they have the live drums n guitars n what their purpose was in a live context.

Back to the topic, the intro beats to Out of Space live IS a sample and Leo does play the same thing over the top of it. The question is, whether that sample was sampled from another song somewhere n chopped up by Liam or did he record it himself then chop it up to give it a 'choppy' sorta sound.

The fact that they edited out that particular sample for the Experience Expanded release does seem to suggest it was sampled from another song somewhere n they didn't want to get sued by anyone, maybe...

well, thats why I said 'listen', not 'look'. anyways- I dont doubt the talent of leo or keiron, I was answering the original question. ..

and freehandjunkie- I didnt try to come across saying leo 'pretends'... except for the case at the chicago gig, where he was trying to be FUNNY and get a reaction from the audience.

its a sample, of course i'm not doubting leo or kierons skills at all, the live drums is about 50% the reason i go to prodigy gigs, there unreal.

but i would say that its half and half, take run with the wolves as an example, its live drums from dave grol but liams chopped them up, i can hear the type of tight chopping that liam has done, thats only half of the drum though when it comes to OOS intro.

if you've heard it live you'll notice theres a big kick, this is sampled because it has more an electronic bass kick feel to it because the pitch goes down, and the snares are the same, however everything else is played by the live drummer i think, those snares have never been out of beat before, and drummers and guitarists fuck up, even liam fucks things up once in a while, but there is not one single recording of those snare drums being off there always at the exact same time, and you've got to tune drums and when your on stage with limited space and time it can be impossible for leo to actually tune his snare to sound the way it does when only 30 seconds ago the snares were completly different, the prodigy doesn't have an epic drum kit with 5 snares and all that shit, and the fact is leo and kieron sound different with live drums, you only need to listen to firestarter from 2005 and from 2009 to confirm this, though OOS's live intro has been the way it is since 2005 which started with kieron, theres no way they can sound exatcly the same 5 years later with a different drummer and with a different drum kit unless there has been some drum sampling done by liam.

it doesn't bother me at all though, i fucking love those live drums and the combination of liams sampling, they blend in together like toast and butter, hence this topic actually exists and the fact is its unique with prodigy venom.

Sometimes the drums attending the original track and sometimes they add something new into the track. OOS is additional, while i.e. TMTTH is attending.

I guess it´s more easy to play snare drums and hi-hats live WITH a doublebass to the "out of space" intro than playin ONLY the snares and hi´s to an intro that also contains a sampled double-bassdrum, cos the main problem would be the sync.

Liam has to do the sync and this just means to start the tune at the correct time while leo playin the intro drums. The main neccessary thing for leo is to get the correct speed of the track. But this could be done by a clock pulse sound into his headphone.

It´s just my opinion.
