PlayStation 3 Success Fueled by Blu-Ray
3/13/2007 Arnold Katayev

In an interview with GameIndustry.Biz, Phil Harrison confidently states that Sony will continue to be the market leader and that the success of Blu-Ray will help fuel that outcome. At Game Developers Conference Harrison said, "I think we have everything that we need to compete, not just relative to the other players in the market but also to grow the market. This is something that is part of our corporate culture."

Harrison noted the Nielsen VideoScan reports of the Blu-Ray outselling its competitor HD-DVD by 2:1 [and 3:1 the following week]. Harrison predicts that the Blu-Ray format will amass popularity as fast as VHS and DVD did.

"That is a positive factor which will play more into the consumer psyche as the year goes on, as more consumer electronics firms launch standalone disc players, as more Blu-ray disc movies become available, and as more shelf space is dedicated to the category at retail," Harrison said.

"In America, where PS3 disc is already out, Blu-ray disc is surging ahead as the next-generation movie format of choice. It's absolutely trouncing any other formats, and I think we'll see the same in Europe and the UK," he said.

Awesome! The battle over formats like that really didn't mean much to me until PS3 made it the prime suspect for their games. So it needs to succeed for me to be happy about the PS3 shelf life

PS3 to Help Blu-Ray Beat DVDs within 3 Years
Victor Dangelo on 17/03/2007

The PlayStation 3 is definitely helping the Blu-Ray format for Sony and its partners as it is allowing the medium to get a very early and big lead over rival HD-DVD as it now focuses on taking out the powerhouse DVD format.

The Blu-ray Disc Association’s Chairman in Europe , Frank Simonis, stated today that within three years the Blu-Ray format will conquer the DVD and HD-DVD formats and reign supreme as the ideal and main medium which the entertainment industry uses.

Early numbers are revealing that the Blu-ray format is already beating out the HD-DVD format by a large margin. The PlayStation 3 is helping this immensely as it is allowing the Blu-ray format to get far more players into the homes of consumers around the world. This is only going to continue to grow as well when the PlayStation 3 launches next week in Europe and the rest of the territories around the world.

The Blu-Ray format does have a larger storage capacity than HD-DVD and can hold five times the storage space which standard DVDs can hold.

The entertainment industry is looking for a boost from somewhere as DVD sales have bee slacking as of late and it could take the next-generation format to get entertainment sales from consumers back to where they were at the peak of DVDs .

Whether or not the Blu-Ray format can really beat out the DVD format in the next three years will have to be seen to be believed; it may take longer than that if it is ever achieved. With Sony doing pack-in movies such as James Bond: Casino Royale in Europe and Talladega Nights in North American launch PlayStation 3’s though, it appears that it is making a big impact on the consumers.

I was just talking about this the other day with a sales rep. He was stating the big battle between HD-DVD's and Blu-Ray and how Sony's marketing of Blu-Ray with their PS3's was a pretty good move in efforts to knock down the competition.

Last time PS2 helped popularising the DVD format and now the Blu-Ray. Wonder what it's next time.. a Super High Definition Mini Blu-Ray hard drive in eatable pill format...?

Maybe he is the ultimate fanboy. I've noticed a slight change now that I've come down on thread crashing in the game section. People have a little more peace of mind to be able to post things freely without all the bickering. It's nice to have a wider selection to choose from I think

Not interested in high-tech and wich HD format wins then eh? I'm in general very interested in high-tech so for me the most interesting aspects of PS3 are technology related. Of course the games (esp. Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2, Vision Gran Turismo etc) interest me as well and are the thing that in the long run really matter the most.

Generally speaking both XBox and Playstation aren't in it soley for games anymore. Both have been slowly working in their consoles to be home entertainment systems since their last system, replacing many of the entertainment objects in your house. in the end bill gates alone has said he hopes to have the xbox as the center piece of your room running virtually everything you use and more

yea man sure but it's just your very strong defence against the PS3 and the fact this is like the 4th or 5th PS3 related thread. Just flaunting a system with potential for sure.

But the games...... leave a lot to be desired. I see no draw with sony's PS3. All of their best franchises are now becoming multi-platform games(see recentley Devil may cry was confirmed to be in development for the 360). Why buy a PS3 when you can have a 360 AND a Wii for the same price? It's kool though I mean it hasn't had time yet,I mean the 360 wasn't gleaming at this stage in it's life either. The 360 has given us a glimpse of what we can expect when devs get to grips with the hardware (GOW anyone). I'm no fanboy (although a nintendo man at heart) but I don't see right now why you would need a PS3 when you can have an xbox 360. The games, both available and upcomming are superior period.

On a side note I guess this is a biast opinion since I just generally hate Sony. The way they handle things is quite rediculous on occasions. Ok my rant is over haha. Excuse the poorley executed grammar and structure. I'm in a hurry ^^

Yea man watch out with that. You're probably seeing a surge in Sony threads now since I've asked that things cool on battles over systems. There's only going to be even more threads as well, and I encourage all other fans of any system or game to post up their threads about their favourite games and systems as well. You're entitled to your opinion of course and I respect you dislike Sony. Just don't start a rant how you hate it the videogame section is growing with Sony threads is all I ask :)

But what the hell does sony helping blu-ray overcome HD-DVD have to do with videogames? It's Sony propaganda. You have all been infected :(

Look... after all... it's just a product.

And company's want to make their product the best selling.

The whole Blu-Ray thing is a good marketing step IMO.

Not only gamers... but also technology freaks will buy the PS3.
