Review by Mike Bax

The brainchild of Liam Howlett, The Prodigy is arguably one of the most energetic live bands you'll EVER see live. The band is revered in the UK as God-like musicians, yet over here in North America we seem to be a bit less enamoured with their kinetic style of music. The band’s biggest success story came by way of the 1996/1997 album The Fat of the Land, containing the incendiary tracks 'Firestarter', 'Smack My Bitch Up', 'Breathe' and 'Minefields'. Controversy over the track 'Smack My Bitch Up' outshone the excellent material included on The Fat of the Land and some backlash on the album and the band, caused them to take hiatus for a few years. But the reformation and subsequent release of a pair of quality albums has brought The Prodigy back into the limelight once again.

The May 24th release of The Prodigy's World's On Fire CD & DVD and CD & Blu-ray is something worth marking down in your calendar. World's On Fire contains footage of The Prodigy headlining the Warrior's Dance Festival at the Milton Keynes Bowl last year in front of 65,000 people. Included on the DVD is the full live performance, along with extra content from the band’s most recent Invaders Must Die tour. The live footage is utterly amazing to behold, and will surely be a game changer for anyone thinking the Prodigy's reputation as a killer live act is overblown.

According to advanced publicity, the band didn't really know what they had after their massive concert was over. They wanted the show to be enormous. They had cameras scattered throughout the festival in the hopes of capturing something interesting to document their biggest show to date, but it wasn't really until they all sat down and actually looked at the energetic footage captured at the show that a proper release was decided upon. Hewlett went to work on mastering all of the audio, and the video footage was inter-spliced with effects, quick cuts, and close-ups to create a perfect presentation of The Prodigy's live show.

The DVD shows off musicians Keith Flint, Liam Howlett, and Maxim in an incredible fashion. Camera close-ups, long shots, and spiralling crane-shots are all interspersed with a flurry of lights and smoke to dizzying effect. A peephole camera set up behind drummer Leo Crabtree shows a unique fish eye perspective of the band with the crowd in the background in numerous shots. A close-up camera of guitarist Rob Holliday (Sulpher; Marilyn Manson) spliced with some of the established crane and stage cameras showcases his contributions to The Prodigy's material in excellent fashion.

Nothing can I type here will do this DVD justice. I've purchased numerous live concerts to watch at home on my couch, and none of them can touch the kinetic mixture of live sound and footage that The Prodigy has delivered on this release.
