'Prometheus': Damon Lindelof Promises An Epic
14 January 2012

When the enigmatic television series “Lost” came to a close two years ago, show co-creator Damon Lindelof thought he was done working on scripts with shadowy plot lines. Then he got an offer to write “Prometheus,” a Ridley Scott-directed science-fiction film whose story has been kept tightly under wraps since its inception.

“Coming out of ‘Lost,’ I was like, ‘What a relief it’ll be to leave mystery and secretiveness behind,’” recalled the 38-year-old, who also was one of the writers who penned last year’s “Cowboys & Aliens.” “Then I found myself in the same situation, and I thought, ‘Here we go again.’”

Months before the film’s June release, little is still known in Hollywood about the 3-D “Prometheus,” whose ensemble cast includes Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron and Idris Elba. The movie was initially billed as a prequel to Scott’s 1979 hit “Alien,” but the filmmaker and the studio behind the picture, 20th Century Fox, have since tried to distance it from that label.

“Alien,” which starred Sigourney Weaver, centered on scientists who encounter extraterrestrials while exploring an alien planet. “Prometheus,” meanwhile, has explorers seeking the origins of human civilization to save future generations of mankind.

What the two do have in common, Lindelof said, is that the universe in which each takes place shares a similar aesthetic. When the writer signed on to the film, Scott was already deep into discussions with production designer Arthur Max, whose résumé includes work on “Se7en” and “Gladiator.” Scott took Lindelof to what he described as a “thick, dramatic vault door” where five twentysomethings who “looked like they were playing video games” were rendering images of planets, creatures and space suits.

“The movie is definitely epic in its scope. One of the filmmakers that we ended up talking about to a fair degree of redundancy was David Lean, who directed ‘Lawrence of Arabia,’” he said. “We wanted to make the movie feel big by having the characters be small in big spaces. That connected to the larger themes we were talking about — that we’re all just these little gnats crawling around on our little planet.”

Sigourney Weaver Says 'Prometheus' Finally Takes the Franchise Where She Wanted It to Go
26 January 2012

The 'Alien' franchise star says she always believed a return to the original planet was the best direction to take the sci-fi horror series.

There’s no shortage of secrets surrounding “Prometheus,” Ridley Scott’s upcoming return to the “Alien” franchise he created, but one thing seems certain: the film will offer fans a fresh perspective on the role of humans and aliens in the series’ universe.

And while franchise star Sigourney Weaver won’t be returning for “Prometheus,” she’s still as curious about Scott’s plans for the film as everyone else — especially because the film seems to be borne from the direction she always wanted the “Alien” films to go.

“Fox and I disagreed on how the franchise should continue. But I’m glad it’s Ridley doing it, and I’ll be as curious as anyone, or maybe more curious, to see it [because] I think he took my suggestion,” Weaver told The Independent. “Fox wanted to go to earth and I said: ‘That’s so boring. Who wants to see aliens on earth?’ I said ‘go back to the planet’.”

And back to the planet the crew of the Prometheus is indeed headed, it seems — though the extent of the film’s connection to the rest of the “Alien” franchise remains a mystery.

Still, Weaver shrugged off her character’s absence from the film, something which makes sense according to the perceived placement of “Prometheus” in the “Alien” timeline, but a bold move given her history with the series.

“That’s show-business,” she said. “I don’t take it personally.”

New Image for Prometheus

Another look at that giant head

The steady drip-feed of Prometheus promotional material continues apace, with a new still of that mysterious stone head surfacing online.

The new image tells us little more than the original batch of pictures did, but it does afford us a look at the giant statue from a different perspective. What are those little pods surrounding it? And what does the statue represent?

Ridley Scott is keeping all such details closely under-wraps, but that hasn’t stopped our anticipation growing by the week.

Hobnobbing at the Storr. 15 January

5-30am start and walking up to the Storr with a scarlet dawn breaking over the mainland sounds like the perfect start to some winter climbing on Skye.

Sadly climbing conditions aren’t quite right at the minute but a day of crewing on the film Prometheus has been a great laugh in a stunning location for Matt, me & a large number of other Skyefolk today.

The film is a prequel to the blockbusting Alien and director Ridley Scott was up there calling all the shots. Matt had been chewing the fat with “Ridders” yesterday as shots were planned but the main man was very busy making the most of short daylight hours on this beautiful day.

Female lead (presumably as a “young” Sigorny Weaver?) is Noomi Rapace of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo fame. A bitter wind was ripping across the slopes removing any heat from the sun & she looked very glad when her scenes were finished & she was whisked away in a chopper.

Michael Fassbender Discusses 'Prometheus' and Ridley Scott's 'New World' with Classic Elements
30 January 2012

Image

The actor credits 'Lost' co-creator Damon Lindelof with convincing him to do the film.

Ridley Scott surprised the world with a new breed of sci-fi thriller when his film “Alien” hatched in 1979. Scott’s latest project “Prometheus” will drill a bit further into the “Alien”-verse, and although the movie will explore new story territory, actor Michael Fassbender praised his director’s classic approach to building suspense.

“It’s a slow burn,” Fassbender told IFC. “There are again sort of action sequences in it of course, but they’re there at the right time to serve the plot as opposed to just filling in another scene.”

The 2012 Golden Globe nominee for his performance in “Shame” admitted that he was skeptical when he first found out about “Prometheus.” He credited writer Damon Lindelof, though, for turning in a script that keeps its thrills simmering beneath the surface.

Fassbender did not use the word “prequel” when describing the relationship between “Prometheus” and “Alien,” but he noted that Lindelof and Scott crafted a film that can stand on its own.

“That was the first thing that struck me when I read it,” the actor explained. “I was like ‘Oh, another Alien film’, I was like ‘Where are you really going to go?’ and then you realize that it’s not and the world we know and we’ve seen in the other Alien films…this is another world.”

That new world will not forget its ties to established continuity, however, and Fassbender expects audiences to pick up on those cues. If the first “Prometheus” trailer was any indication, those cues will be plentiful, with the Space Jockey, his horse-shoe shaped spaceship and the Weyland-Yutani Coporation’s logo all showing up onscreen.

“There are connecting veins and you will recognize things,” Fassbender said, “but it’s like wow this is a whole new world altogether.”

“Prometheus” hits theaters on June 9, at which point its links to “Alien” will likely be made clear. Until then, Fassbender did offer assurance straight from the man responsible for infestation aboard the Nostromo more than 30 years ago.

“I haven’t seen anything,” he said, “but speaking to Ridley he seems to be really happy.”

n an interview with Entertainment Weekly today, Ridley Scott himself denied working with Ford on his Blade Runner project, but he did hint that there might be more than one Prometheus in the works...

When asked if he had any other plans besides Blade Runner he replies:

Quote:
"Right. I just thought Prometheus was so enjoyable — returning to the world of science fiction was so fun — that I wanted to [go back to Blade Runner, too]. I’m also thinking about what the hell I might do for a Prometheus 2."

When asked if there will indeed be a Prometheus 2, Scott replied by with a grin and a knock on the wooden table.

Watch 'Prometheus' Character Peter Weyland's Viral Talk at TED2023
28 February 2012

Just yesterday director Ridley Scott revealed the link between Prometheus and Alien to be within a character played by Guy Pearce. In Alien, a company called Weyland-Yutani sent the Nostromo ship into space, and Pearce is playing Peter Weyland in Prometheus. It's a good thing we have that information as a bit of a viral campaign is beginning with a new video at TED2023 (or Technology, Entertainment and Design), which has previously featured talks from J.J. Abrams, has Pearce speaking as Weyland about changing the world and making the future through his company Weyland Industries. This is just awesome!

The video has Weyland speaking in the year 2023, linked by the Prometheus Facebook (via SlashFilm):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=caHdpmkIvHM

The page on the official TED blog describes Peter Weyland (Pearce) like this:

"Peter Weyland has been a magnet for controversy since he announced his intent to build the first convincingly humanoid robotic system by the end of the decade.

Whether challenging the ethical boundaries of medicine with nanotechnology or going toe to toe with the Vatican itself on the issue of gene-therapy sterilization, Sir Peter prides himself on his motto, "If we can, we must." After a three year media blackout, Weyland has finally emerged to reveal where he's heading next. Wherever that may be, we will most certainly want to follow."

It's not exactly clear how all this will tie into Prometheus yet, but apparently this video will not be in the film itself. However, Ridley Scott's son, Luke Scott, directed the video which was conceived by the Alien director and also Damon Lindelof, the writer of Prometheus. In fact, The TED blog also has a great Q&A with Lindelof about writing a lecture for their series as if it took place in the future and about TED in general. You can check that out right here. An website for Weyland is also up at WeylandIndustries.com

Right now it prominently features the video saying, "Considered a seminal moment in the career of our founder Peter Weyland, this 2023 TED Talk launched Weyland Corp into the international spotlight. In honor of our 50th year, Weyland Corp is planning to offer a new round of investment soon. Interested parties can expect to find out more within the next few days." It also lists the hashtag #WeylandInvestors so there's likely more to come from this website and a hopefully exciting viral campaign leading up to the release of the film in June.
