Hey guys, just a tech question about liams live set up, purely what comes from his gear, im wondering if all the tracks are summed/mixed to mono or whether there is a mono ''centre' track with some bits in stereo for effect, or whether is purely stereo identical mix to the studio tracks?

everyone i speak to says to mix in mono because of all the shitty systems and bad acoustics, but will mixing in stereo for a bit of ''space'' really sound THAT shit?!

my opinion is it would be terrible at a prodigy concert with a lot of wind and stereo FX everything would just be a mess.. and i dont think just listening to some live recordings is enough because they could be different to what comes to the speakers!

does anybody really know?

When I saw them at big day out, poison was definitely in stereo - but his mixes are probably mono safe, meaning that they'll also sound fine on a mono system.

The problem with mixing for stereo is that some stereo effects introduce all sorts of anomalies like phase cancellation when played back through a mono system (think mechanics listening to a cheap radio in their workshop, or some hipster with some funky bluetooth speaker) so you have to construct your mix according to what audience you imagine will be listening and how.

up until now ive run everything out of my laptop mono, but i think its getting buried under everything because of the 'space', im really not sure.

Im now thinking i may run stereo out of my laptop + mono bass and maybe a mono fx line for tamourine etc (i can have up to 4) i have to fit real vocals, guitar and drums with that.. any idea what would work best?

I got a bluetooth headset which I barely use, but it's full stereo. Nothing distorted going on there, normal stereo effects occur on my headset. I totally ripped a cable apart with my coat zipper, so in my anger and frustration rush I bought a wireless headset the same day.

Liam plays his live stuff stereo, at least parts. I actually payed attention to it when I saw them live, Take Me To The Hospital intro was definitely stereo. Also on the 2:13 part with the cymbals, the left channel was intact when played live. I noticed World's on Fire live (part on 3:08, low synth on right channel) was mono though, so I guess he mixes every track seperately? Good question, I have no idea when/what.

By the way, I was standing almost front row, just a few feet from the middle so I should've got a decent place to notice stereo.

this is practical but it's not a rule..
it mostly depends from what you wanna do with your tune and how much time you're willing to spend..
