I first heard The Prodigy on the Best Of Rave compilation from Priority Records with their remix of "Instruments Of Darkness" by Art Of Noise.
Then on another double disc rave compilation from Rhino Records, I heard Charly and Everybody In The Place.
This was in 1993 and me and my brother were hooked and hunted down anything we can get for the next few years. Blasting all the Experience singles and album and hearing Jilted for the first time. We were instantly hooked.
But what really did it was one was late night, as I'm getting ready for bed and have MTV playing in the background. I walk in on a black and white video playing with this crazy looking fella with a double mohawk and American flag shirt running around in an abandoned tunnel like a mad man. I shouted for my brother to come in and we were both floored.
We kept asking, "What the fuck is this? Who the fuck is this?
And then as the video ended, the artist song and information came up on the screen, and this shows you how early it was before the release of the album, it said...
The Prodigy
Firestarter
it actually still had the "The" in front of Prodigy and this was in the States
and me and my brother were like "Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? This is The Prodigy? What the fuck happened? Holy shit!"
Because let's face it, "Firestarter" was a huge jump and drastic change since the Experience/Jilted days... in a good way of course. We were just so blown away that it was them. After blasting their previous stuff, we just weren't expecting this track to be by The Prodigy.
...that moment will live with me forever.
I didn't mind the Fashionably Loud performance, I was just so psyched to see something so different, fresh, and actually awesome on MTV for a chance. So I'll take it! Plus the night when MTV had Live At The 10 Spot and played an edited version of their performance from Brixton Academy in '97. That was fucking awesome as well.
I actually still have my bootleg CD of that performance titled "Live At The 10 Spot." Only thing, curses were cut out during the broadcast, so the CD has the same cut outs. Plus it has several tracks from their Glastonbury performance that year. Picked it up at this local semi-head shop called Utopia that sold alternative/gothy stuff, clothes, and bootleg CDs.
So happy they included the uncensored performance on the Their Law DVD, but still not the full show.

It doesn't get much more iconic than Kieth rolling out on stage in that plastic ball to Break and enter at Glastonbury in 1995. Maxim sporting a bath robe, nae hair and metal teeth. Fucking. Epic.

I'm quite a recent fan to be honest. Have i ever mentioned i'm 19? Favourite album is Jilted but IMD is the anthem to my teenage years for sure.
An iconic moment for me was anticipating the new stuff from prodge for a long time since 07 and finally hearing Invaders Must Die on radio 1 for its first play was quite an experience. It didnt sound like anything i expected it to be, but it was banging.
Then hearing Omen for the first time during thr zane lowe takeover..... Wow. The hairs on my arm and ballsack started sticking up and i got goosebumps.. It was such a raw production and like nothing i had ever heard before. It was big.
Bring on HTSAJF!!!!!

Everyone keeps mentioning important moments in their history of listening to The Prodigy. But if I had to choose not yet mentioned iconic moments for the band, not only for me, then I'd have three.
First, Jilted. The best album of the band, their greatest thing when not looking at the commercial successes. I might like Fat as much as Jilted, but the latter provided a breakthrough in their style, even more significant than Fat did IMO.
Then, Their Law release and tour. Maybe most of you will think it's the least important moment in their history. But they were after a really difficult release - AONO, which was essentially Liam's solo album, and the band neared the end. Their Law, and the greatest hits tour that followed it, was a great idea - I can't imagine Liam would make a good album shortly after AONO. It was the best way to keep the band alive and restore their energy.
Lastly, IMD era. Warriors Dance, Run and WOF being played at the concerts, Omen being released, everything was pointing at a great comeback and it was indeed. Long time after their previous releases, The Prodigy had shown the world that they still can break walls (and window pane) with their music. This album made me never doubt again in Liam's abilities. The band is the only one I can be sure of delivering music that I will love, I know their next record will be up to my high expectations.

They had interviews throughout the show, general banter and as a 14 year old I sat in awe watching them until the very end of the video... they then played an instrumental segment of Firestarter, the first real new material from the Prodigy for a while...
Hearing for the first time that guitar sound, the beats and Art of Noise samples... it sounded totally alien, like nothing else I'd ever heard. They had flirted with guitars before, live they were developing their sound but this track totally blew my head off.
I sat all day rewinding the video, playing it again and again... just with pure excitement, the same excitement I had when I first head No Good. I knew this was a completely new sound and energy but had no idea what it would mean... that track changed everything for the Prodigy.
There are loads more moments after that, hearing SMBU for the first time on the breathe tour to hearing WoF for the first time in Sheffield but this was a massive turning point.
And Stule as for underground... seeing them on a catwalk going through the motions on MTV in 1997 pissed me off just as much!
I remember watching this as well!! I also recorded this on VHS!! Amazing times. Also the release of the Electronic Punks VHS was great. And also the We Eat Rhythm tape off the front of select just after MFTJG was released. I also remember an article in Select Magazine where Liam had to pose as some random bloke looking to team up with someone to form a band. He played them Voodoo people as an example of his work. The they revealed that Liam was from the Prodigy at the end. Anyone remember that one?

I don't I'm afraid. They are out there somewhere in some form I guess. Select Magazine used to be a like a Prodigy fanzine. Loads of interviews and stuff. I remember when We Eat Rhythm came out on the unreleased tracks demo tape and there was an interview with Liam on how he made the track and why it wasn't included on Jilted. "It's a mess of Rhythms that took absolutely ages to do" was a quote I remember.
Also, there was a cover tape with the Emperion mix of Firestarter on it, and you can here Liam singing the lyrics, I'm a Firestarter, twisted Firestarter. It was definitely Liam on it. He put the emphasis on 'twisted', like 'twwwwwwisted'
Quality days. I miss 'em.
Anyone else remember these? This was before the Internet by the way when you had to travel to WH Smith to get your monthly fix.

Could be whatever you feel personally as a moment in your life or whatever you think made the band step up to the next level. It could be good or bad. I'll start with a moment that has been i think mostly forgotten by everyone if they were not aware of it before. The Prodigy played a private gig in Russia some time in 2007 to a select few and vip types *cough*mafia*cough*. The crowd probably amounted to 100-150 people at a guess and the videos that surfaced showed that they were going though the motions and looked bored at stages. Unfortunatly the youtube links have ceased to exist but maybe someone here has downloads of it. The gig gave way to a lot of divided opinions here as seen by the topic found here. Personally, I couldn't care less that they did played a gig to bored pissed up Russians but whatever paid for the completion of IMD has to be pretty decent. Its iconic to me because it shattered the illusion of them being 'underground'. They are just another band at the end of the day. So if you have moments you feel are iconic, stick em up here.
Wow i really remember those days in BK forum , a lot of divide opinions , i remember the videos also very lame and very boring gig they opened with Wake The F. Up , and well ... the rest is history , a lot of moaners back in those days telling about the ending of The Prodigy , anothers saying that Liam was a greed fucker and blah blah blah.
For me an iconic moment in the Prodigy History was the "coming back" after AONO , a very nice record in my opinion , but the coming back was really sick with the world tour cheers everyone !
