Ekko wrote: Something happened after '98 or '99. I can't stop suspecting he just partied a little too hard post FOTL, bringing all the fuzz, gigs, fame, free girls, drugs and general mayhem. I'm not joking when I say I guess he lost a little brain power along the way. Just compare interviews from like '95 or so to the ones these days or even 2004 or something. He once had something to say, some really clever bits about music, about other acts, about Keith, about the differences in the countries he's seen, about his vision. Now he's just kind of an empty shell and he really looks bad since a while. I know I'll sound just like the next retro buff, but I love watching their old shows, where Liam is switching disks on the W-30, jumping around and the whole thing feels fresh and so energetic. It just looks like hard work and endless fun. I read the book from Martin Roach a couple of years ago and I loved every bit Liam had to say in there. It covers their time up until '95 or '96 or so and Liam tells a lot about how he perceives music, where he gets his samples from, how he's writing differently every time he starts songs, how he and Neill met and started doing music together, how he saw and felt the band at that time and what his next ideas for them to morph into something new yet again - it's really deep and helps to dive into this inspiring and astounding mind of Liam.
All this evaporated somehwere between '98 and '2002 or so. I consider the Dirtchamber his last true great move. I think he was still in the zone at that time, cos that thing is a creative blast and like all the other Prodge stuff back then it's one of a kind and so unique, it hasn't been paralleled before or after.
Well, time to close my little retro thing here. I'm just glad "I was there" and consider myself lucky. But at the same time it's sad to see how something wonderful can stop working and fall to mediocracy.
Also, when the 90's ended, a lot of other acts that had made amazing 90's albums never managed to match them in the 00's, not by quite a long way. Not that their 00's output was bad, not by any means, but it'll never be as good as their 90's albums...
Other acts such as Massive Attack, better in the 90's, so was Jamiroquai and Nine Inch Nails. There are many more examples as well, it's like somehow the 90's was a glorious time for new music and many acts that established themselves in the 90's ended going off a cliff the moment the 00's came around...
I guess what I'm saying is this isn't just unique to Prodigy, but I agree they are a prime example...

He got a life, simple as that.
The Prodigy toured non-stop from 94 onward, and post Y2K the human beings that compose of The Prodigy took on their greatest live act to date, their own lives. They are human like you and I, and they deserve to do what they want with their life. Marry, have kids, 8 hours of sleep. Sure, partying and drinking and chicks was great, but personally I'm 31, and I'm past that age, and I would expect they're past it as well.
These guys are all 40+, and you all want them to be the 20 year old electronic punks they once were? Step back for a moment and think about how stupid that sounds? Now step back again and think about how different your body/life is today than it was 10 years ago? Now step back again and let go of the spite to the band for simply having a life. I hope they are good at it as they are providing me a release from my beautiful life for the past 20 years, because they deserve it.
MODS - you all need to delete this stupid opinion-ating on this topic, enough is enough. I come here daily to check up on my favorite band, not hear people cry about what they think the band is doing wrong.

You didn't read anything I've written. I couldn't care less for their punky image or their wild days or felt age or whatsoever. Spare me your "Step back and think about what you've said"-teachings. And congrats on being 31, I'm 32 and don't see any reason in behaving according to numbers, just behaving in what you feel like. Plus, again, I never wanted them to party as hard as before or be young again or any of what you wrote. You just read one sentence of my post and thought you'd know where this was going. Ah come one. I'll never understand why people go to places where opinions are exchanged, read everything (-or in your case actually not-) and then complain to mum & dad about it. Which is another thing: A forum should be living and breathig freely, not moderated to death, just because someone didn't like something another participant wrote. I wasn't offensive, didn't harm anyone and haven't been writing out of my a**. If I was, there's reason to delete or shout out warnings. But this is childish. Plus, again, I never said they were doing things wrong, you said that.
On another note: people don't grow up within one year...

I guess I slightly agree with you, to a point. It's just non stop these days with the negativity in here! The band is fucking awesome, and I enjoy listening to anything they put out!
Either I'm getting fat, or once I hit 30 I felt as if my life advanced 10 years! Tell me your secret

All good. The negativity is definitely here and I can't say I'm saying only flowery things about them, but I also read a lot of positive words. I still think they're a hell of a band and do one of the coolest life shows I've seen.
Plus, for 40+, they're pretty fit and lots of others of their time went for quiet route long ago. I just noticed that Liam has gone through a major change in a really short period of time and that shows in many aspects. But yeah, it's part of the whole R'n'R-thing, probably.
Me turning 30 was a little downer also, and others here were having similar experiences. But, honestly, I had the mini version of this when I turned 20 already. It comes and goes, and I always try to take this (pressure) as a motivation to eat and live healthy, as I see no other positive use in this feeling of pressure. Logically speaking, of course. Can't say I handle this strictly enough to talk about it

Haha, did it sound that bad?
I'm really not complaining, just trying to be more aware of what's good and what's not at this age. I still think being 30 something today is better than being 20 something 200 years ago and that it's generally quite a good age. Where I live 45 year old punks date 25 year old fashion girls, so most age rules are broken around here. I liked being sub 30 but I'm happy to be out of the 20s also..
But enough from this weeks selh-help group, back to topic!

No hard feelings, I re-read your original post in full and see the point you're making is far off from the point I must have thought you were trying to make. Just hope they can bring the noise for one more album.

i think if they've made any progress, they would have played something on June 1st. liam even said in an interview they were going to test new stuff in all the future gigs... that was back at the end of 2012
