Please only answer the question if you've tried Vista...

I did this in about 2-3 other forms just wanted to see what you guys think....

at 2 other forms, 21.82% say they like, 27.27% say they don't know yet, 50.91% say they don't like it...

anyway those were 2 computer related forums wondering what non strictly computer geeks think about it:P

The few instalations i have tried just annoyed the shit out of me. Message boxes like "are you really REALLLY sure you wanted to click this button?" seems to be appering all the time, wich can be rather annoying for someone who is just a little smarter than the average user. I know some can be turned off, but during instalation it could have been nice to have been able to choose betwen n00b and 1337 or something I see they made visual studio 2005 work on it now wich is nice, but one of the major new features, directx 10, is a bit irrelevant to me as im not gaming on the PC.

Yes, I like it. Been working with it since the end of last year. I have some complaints, but most do not affect Windows Vista, but instead third party drivers, anti-virus software, et cetera.

At the end of last year there were hardly any proper third party drivers. The drivers which could be found were in an alpha stage and some in beta, which made the system unresponsive at times. Still some drivers have not been sorted, which is a shame. I know certain shops which sell Windows Vista pre-installed computers which contain beta drivers in the default image. That is not acceptable.

As for anti-virus software, at the end of last year there were zero applications which were supported under Windows Vista. Since December it's getting better and better and by now all anti-virus software developers have Windows Vista supported anti-virus software.

With Windows XP there were much less problems with third party companies in regards to drivers, anti-virus software, et cetera.

I like the new interface. Although it is quite heavy in regards to system demands, it does make working easier. There are tools which did the same already in Windows XP, but those were third party applications which were not always properly supported, but Microsoft has done a nice job in changing the user interface.

BitLocker is a nice new feature, but it can only encrypt the system drive. I don't understand why they didn't have it to replace EFS, which you now still have to use for your other drives. Anyway, BitLocker is nicely incorporated into the operating system.

There are now even more policy options, the built in personal firewall has been drastically improved, Windows Defender has been incorporated into Windows Vista, all these are good improvements. I must say though that too many policy options doesn't make things more clear always. I would have liked it if they would have released more default templates which can function as a start for configuring the system. The templates which they do supply, I'm not too fond about.

Anyway, in short, I'm quite pleased with Windows Vista. I don't see it replacing Windows XP in a business environment soon though. Once Longhorn is done, companies might be tempted more quickly to switch to Windows Vista.

I use this system(beta version) some times ago, and i like it

im using vista ultimate, and i like it.
its more demanding then xp, it takes more
memory and cpu power. but so far, im impressed.
its stable, and user friendly.

I rather have a stable system instead of a fancy looking system.

but the downside is that it demands a little more power

but what impressed me when i tried out vista first of all, was the fact
that my graphic card was installed through vista automatically,
so was my onboard network card (which made accessing the net possible at once) and the same for my soundcard. all these things were installed and working, and vista did this on its own. so this is an improvement from the time i used xp i guess. for my part

I have Vista, I tryed to get several anti virus programs but they call cost, so i just got a few crappy free ones. whats the best free one?

don't like 'em much... i need the service packs now

I don't use a freeware anti-virus scanner myself, I use Symantec AntiVirus 10.2 Corporate Edition, which I've gotten for free due to my work.

any idea what a good free one is?

Sensible browsing on the internet and a fully updated windows instalation is free and it works very well

Try combine AVG antivirus with Zone-alarm firewall. They are both free and should provide some security. In my experience, AVG is far from providing 100% safety though, so you still have to think about what you download and run even when the link was send to you by a friend on msn for example. I installed those two on my grandparents PC, and they havent had problems with vira for about a year (they arent downloading much warez and stuff though).

Just a little tip:
The "QuickJava" extension to firefox, will allow you to disable java applets (and javascript) wich is a well known security hazard if you are searching for warez/porn/etc (and because java applets takes ages to load and makes your browser slow). With one click you can turn it on again if you are visiting a site that requires java applets.
