The Prodigy say their retirement has 'got to be soon' due to 'the realities of age'

Quote:
The Prodigy have discussed the possibility of their retirement for the first time, admitting that the band is "gonna come to an end at some point".

The group recently released their sixth studio album, 'The Day Is My Enemy', earlier this year with the album going on to become their sixth consecutive Number One. Despite their continued success, speaking in the new issue of NME, which is on newsstands now and available digitally, the band claimed that their 25 year-strong career could be drawing to a close.

"I think that the band's gonna come to an end at some point," vocalist Keith Flint told NME. "And it's got to be soon. It will end before we want it to because of the realities of age." Speaking of their advancing ages (the group are all in their forties), keyboardist Liam Howlett added, "There comes a point where you don't want to be Uncle Alan at the wedding reception."

Despite their own speculation however, the band denied having a timeline for their conclusion. Flint described himself as being "more settled in the band and everything else than I've ever been". He added:"The people decide when we fuck off, but it can't go on forever.

"We'll just figure it out. We haven't set dates. I think this might be the first time we've talked about it."

The Prodigy recently teamed up with Sleaford Mods frontman Jason Williamson for their new album track 'Ibiza'. Speaking of the song Howlett recently said, "I'm not really into collaborations, but it doesn't sound like a collaboration somehow. I'd been checking out Sleaford Mods for ages, and I felt like we had an energy in common, that it could work. So I sent him the beat – I knew he'd like the beat – then we were off."

The Prodigy are joint headliners of Isle Of Wight Festival on June 12 alongside The Black Keys. They also tour in May. Watch the band discuss their new album in a video interview with NME below.

This whole talk about retirement scares the shit out of me.

I respect the "going out on the top" philosophy but they can really write another nr. 1 album in 4 years time if they really wanted. blasting all the guns they have. also no one is telling to go fuck off the stage during gig's, can't imagine it would change in 4 years. except maybe if it's a health issue.

to be honest I am quite suprised that they still do live gigs. considering their daily drug consume in their earlier years i find it awesome that maxim can go on stage and do jumping and screaming for a good 80 minutes being 48 and all.
however i would really like them to produce music even after they retire.

Did they really say this in the interview? How embarrassing...

Well the end is gonna come, but they've never really referred to it this explicitly... I would be happy if we can have more prodigy music in the near future then... and maybe alot of LH solo works later on... I'm glad I will see them at least 3 times live this year :)

not sure how it would feel to know you're attending the last or one of the last shows... Would be cool if it could be something like MK :)

Only worry here is most Prodigy music is fueled by the live show. Without that it would be more of a solo thing rather than Prodigy...

As I said in another thread, they probably have max 10-12 more years! Maxim ain't doing this at 60 years old! We'll get an anouncement within the next decade I believe!

That's quite optimistic. I'd be happy with 5 more years.

I think they will quit when the band turns 30 year old, the year 2020

Yeah I think they should come out with one last album and/or unreleased tracks collection and finish The Prodigy as we know it on the 30 year anniversary in 2020.

I'm sure Liam will continue to produce and do his thing, but the live show can't go on the way it currently does.
But there's lots of amazing technology to put on crazy live shows and would love to see Liam rock some solo shows and focus on the less Keith/Maxim live type tracks.
This could open Liam up to playing more of the back catalog stuff that we don't get to normally hear because the shows are focused on Keith and Maxim-led material.

I don't think it's the end...
Just the end of the live shows as we know them.

I can't imagine Liam just stopping music all together.
