Why do people moan so much about setlists?

Saying breathe is a crap opener is ridicoulous. I just dont get it :? :?

i don't know, maybe because after some time, some of us want just some change and surprises. But of course we're not the band and if they do their choices, there must be a reason.

playing the same shit over and over again with minimal (when i say minimal, its really MINIMAL) is boring, unprofessional and shows that you are only playing to cash in.
After 99 they stopped changing the setlist often from show to show.

Note: this is intended to be a kinda sorta objective analysis on how the majority thinks, the opinions and personal remarks about the gigs I attended to, are labeled as such. I am not that much of a moaner, I was tired of the same stuff at 2011, but then generally stuff started to slowly become better. I think I had much more problems with the band promising the album then failing to deliver for quuuuite some time. Setlists were simply a consequence of that, considering how Liam encountered a writers block of sorts, I think he didn't do a bad job with the setlists in the 2012-2015 period...

First of all, people are disappointed that Liam prefers to play his own favourite tracks (I assume), instead of favourite tracks of people here. This started to change recently, with Medicine and Destroy entering the setlist (hopefully permanently, most of people around here seem to like those two tracks a lot), I'm wondering if Liam actually took a look at the forums again, despite his promise on trying not to ;) Generally people wish he kicked out Get Your Fight On or Run, maybe IMD as well. Opinion: I don't think that's really so many tracks that it destroys the setlist (and, well, I don't mind Run and IMD live). Personally I have no problems with the setlist now, especially assuming the 2 new excellent additions will stay for the Polish gig. Things are much more interesting than in the last few years.

Which brings us to the next reason. The setlists were quite boring in the IMD era. It is possible that even Keith had too much of it, judging from the stuff the boys keep saying in the interviews. I do realize that for most people going to see them, setlists won't matter much; the problem starts when we have near same setlists for years in a row. Makes the point of going to see them each year much less fun.

For example, take a look at those three setlists.

http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/the-prodi ... 66ade.html - it was their first year touring after IMD got released, this is the Polish 2009 gig

http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/the-prodi ... fce42.html - the Download gig when Jetfighter and Spitfast were premiered

http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/the-prodi ... f2cc7.html - the last gig of the IMD era (before the Australian gigs where new stuff was premiered)

Comparing the first and second gig - three new tracks added; Jetfighter (premiere), Dogbite and AWOL (both premiered December 2011). As for the older tracks, he added Thunder dub (January 2010), Poison's chapter 2 (2010 somewhere before Milton Keynes), Spitfire+Spitfast (spitfast part's premiere). Removed WD (2 months before this gig) and Out of Space. The track order remains very similar (on other gigs even more so, as on the particular Download gig the order was changed a little). I didn't count Comanche, it's a special track. Opinion: One could say "the changes aren't that bad for three years of gigs", I'd disagree since as you can see it was more like "two changes per year" which gets tiring even if you attend to gigs in your country once each year. I've never felt weirder than on the 2011 Polish infamous Woodstock gig; while the surrounding drama wasn't the band's fault, I found it hard to disagree with the Woodstock fans complaining about the quality of the concert itself. I felt like watching World's on Fire DVD, in 3D, in a cinema that has 500k standing places, and the screen's ridiculously far away. At the 2012 Polish gig (it was right after Download, so the set was similar) it was much better only because of the three new tracks and Spitfire/Spitfast hybrid. I wasn't 100% satisfied (more like 80%), but at least I didn't want to stop following their gigs like I felt after Woodstock, and I really had fun.

Second and third gig comparision: removed Thunder dub, Dogbite, Diesel Power; added Rok-Weiler, AWOL Beat Jam. Re-added Out of Space. That's three years of changes to the setlists. In the three years time, there were two "new beats" fills played for maybe 10 gigs or so; also GYFO and The Day early versions got played once or twice on the British gigs.

Why do I even write about the IMD era? You may say it's the past, but it helps to understand the frustration, which I think we need to un-learn now, having nice brand new setlist and all. At least for a year or two... ;) Generally, I think the major reason is that we are used to complaining about the setlists, because of the long period when nothing happened, both on the new album and setlists side.

as keef said in an interview, you got to play the classics, otherwise people get dissapointed. partly agreed. a lot of people come to hear the classics. however, what bothers me and what i really dont get is how keeping the majority of the setlist the same (a lot of times even the order) doesnt get boring for themselves?? they keep saying they keep it fresh and interesting all the time, but mostly it seems they dont change much. note that im talking about the past, not the current era.

maybe they do live in a time capsule

Wow kenny, dunno if you watched them live after tdime in Uk but they were hard as ever an crowd felt that. As for the setlist its the new era and I want to hear new tdime stuff, but I agree they need to put some experienxe and jilted tracks in the set. Best setlist in new era was their law tour. When they played razor, back to skool, dead ken beats, warning, aono stuff, out of space...

Kenny is obviously not a TDIME fan.

But at Ally Pally, after two songs in I was thinking "these guys are still on top of this" - 'twas a brilliant show.

Sure the setlists don't change much, but for most people like me who don't go to 2 or 3 dates of every tour, or follow them from country to country, this is not a huge problem. I average about 1 gig every 2 years so it's always fresh for me! (will be 2 this year though whahooop)
