taken from th uk government law website

Places you won’t be able to smoke (as of 1st July)

You won’t be able to smoke in:

* pubs
* bars
* nightclubs
* cafes
* restaurants
* membership clubs
* shopping centres
* public transport and work vehicles used by more than one person
* indoor smoking rooms (for example at places of work)

Where you will be able to smoke

You will be able to smoke in:

* private dwellings
* prisons
* care homes
* some pre-designated smoking rooms in hotels and guesthouses (although not dormitories)

Long-stay secure psychiatric facilities where patients stay for more than six months will be able to have smoking rooms until July 2008.
Exceptions

There are exceptions to the regulations.
Your private dwelling does not have to be smokefree unless any parts of the dwelling are used solely for a place of work for:

* more than one person who does not live in the dwelling
* a person who does live at the dwelling and a person who does not
* any person, whether they live at the dwelling or not, if people who don’t live at the dwelling come to give or receive goods or services

Penalties and fines

Breaking the smokefree law is a criminal offence. The fixed penalty notices and maximum fine for each offence are:

* smoking in smokefree premises or work vehicles: a fixed penalty notice of £50 (reduced to £30 if paid in 15 days) for the person smoking, or a maximum fine of £200 if prosecuted and convicted by a court
* failure to display no-smoking signs: a fixed penalty notice of £200 (reduced to £150 if paid in 15 days) for whoever manages or occupies the smokefree premises or vehicle - or a maximum fine of £1000 if prosecuted and convicted by a court

Local councils will be enforcing the new law in England.
If you see smoking in a smokefree area

From 1 July 2007 you can call 0800 587 166 7 to report possible breaches of the law. This information will be passed to local councils to follow-up if appropriate.

smoking ban in pubs, resteurants, nightclubs etc. is bullshit. but to be honest i hate people which are smoking in public places. i'm not smoking and its very uncomfortable for me to breath with some shit. i totally agree with smoking ban in public places like bus stops, hospitals, public transport etc.

I'm with you there mate, but even then I think some places should still allow folks to smoke if they want to (ie pubs and clubs).

businesses are closing down due to smoking bans in the US i'm happier than ever.. not for the companies loss but the proof that these so called polls always hold more non smokers than non.. proof today no doctor can prove second hand smoke kills.. they have no way of telling. people who've never smoked and died of lung cancer show the same symptoms of so called second hand smokers.. boo hoo :P

i say quit trying to rule someone elses's life... next we'll all stop eating meat due to vegetarian rights... :roll:
