FLEVOLAND

The Netherlands is divided into twelve provinces. One of these provinces is called Flevoland. It's located in the center of The Netherlands (see image below). Flevoland is the youngest province. It used to be water until 1918, when they decided to turn a part of the Zuiderzee ("Southsea") into land to grow for instance crops.

After World War II the population of Amsterdam grew quickly, so they designed two cities where people could move to: Lelystad in the east of the province and Almere in the south (see image below). It wasn't until 1986 that this province officially got it's name: Flevoland.

ALMERE

Almere was found in 1976. It lies completely under the sea level (2 to 5 meters). Almere counts approximately 182.000 people in total. Almere is the 8th biggest city in The Netherlands. The city is divided into approximately seven parts. The part of Almere where I live is called Almere Buiten.



ALMERE BUITEN

Almere Buiten counts approximately 50.000 people in total. Almere Buiten itself is again divided into approximately 12 smaller parts. The part of Almere Buiten where I live is the Regenboogbuurt ("Rainbowneighborhood"), which is known for it's colourful and exclusive buildings and houses.

THE NEW CITY CENTER

Almere Buiten feels somewhat like a village. It is the only part of Almere which has it's own real center. Other parts of Almere do have their own shops, but not as many as found in Almere Buiten. For proper shopping however it's better to go to the center of Almere Stad, the real shopping center of the whole of Almere, which they recently drastically expanded.
