It's better to have them but I needed them removed. The spleen filters or destroys red blood cells but I have hereditary spherocytosis that makes my blood cells round like a ball, instead of the donut (w/ the middle still there) shape. So my spleen, doing its job, was destroying as much red blood cells and possible and it caused my spleen to start storing the rbc's to avoid having them in my blood stream. So I had to have it removed before it would rupture and be f'ing painful.
The gallbladder releases bile to help with digestion but all my gallbladder's bile was hardening into gallstones so they did a 2for and removed while I had my splenectomy to avoid having to laser me open a month down the road.
The recovery was wicked painful, especially when I woke from anesthesia and tried to sit, essentially trying to do a sit up. It didn't happen. Thats my story.
