If anyone's fluent in Latin, I'd need a translation of ''keep hope alive" absolutely and gramatically correct.

Cheers

i need to crash out in a bit, but if you give me the morning i reckon i could get it, or at least persuade someone to do it for you.

this sort of task is right up my street. who can be the first bk member to get a latin translation? how fucking obscure can we get

Cheers jugo. I thought I'd ask online before going to my high school latin teacher or the first priest I can find. Still, even if I found them they wouldnt be able to translate from English to Latin since ''keep hope alive" can be translated to my language in several different ways.

Good luck with the quest. And, yes, we are getting obscure. 8-)

well we got a reply, but he's not happy with it!

Quote:
This is tough. I can't come up with any authoritative example of a similar utterance.

Conserva(te) spem.

conveys the idea, I think: "preserve hope". (The -te would be employed if the entity addressed were plural).

But this does not translate the "living".

How about:

Spes vivans conservetur.

"Let living hope be preserved".

I'm not real happy with either of these. Maybe one of my colleagues has a better idea?

i've been having a think about this.

does it have to be the exact phrase 'keep hope alive'?

my reason for asking is that it's an idiomatic phrase in english, which does make it hard to translate. what i mean is, it sounds good in english, but doesn't have the same meaning in another language if you translate it word for word. 'hope' can be 'alive' in english, but not in some other languages, so a literal translation sounds a bit strange.

in russian, for example, it would translate as 'don't give in', or 'never stop trying', if you keep with the meaning.

how about "never give up"? it keeps the meaning, and would be easier to translate.

Im not really happy with those translations either. They dont have the same meaning since it is an idiom after all as you've said, jugo.
Too bad. I really wanted that exact translation. The translation that guy provided is weird as well because, in latin: "TENEO" means "KEEP", as well as "SERVO". "HOPE" is "SPES" and "ALIVE" is "VIVO".

Therefore: "Teneo Spes Vivo" or "Servo Spes Vivo".

The thing is, its probably not gramatically correct. On the other hand, the guy that translated the phrase doesnt use any of the words I've just written.

online translators are so shit it's untrue.

put a phrase in, translate it to one language, then to another, then back to the original, and see what you get.

right.

just had a look and we've got another reply from someone calling themselves quemquem me facis at http://latinforum.org/viewtopic.php?t=2939

Quote:
Vivans...I think you may have confused your subjunctives here Iynx (i.e. accidentally applied the vowel change for the subjunctive to your participle), the participle would be vivens.

I do like the construction, however.

so they seem to go for "Spes vivens conservetur"

i'll post up your (edited) comment and see what happens...
