<  OFF TOPIC / QUESTIONS  ~  Looking for anyone fluent in Latin?

oh big monkey nads. i really thought we had it then....

just when it seemed that cepasaccus was the hero of the day, along comes fucking quemquem me facis to stick his nose in.

he reckons that:

couple of things spring to mind here;
1. where'd the 3rd go then smarty pants?
2. chemical was absolutely right when he said "Im sure they'll write a ton of utter shite concerning this expression", and
3. cepasaccus is probably going to go medieval on quemquem me facis's ass pretty soon.

now cato's back in the area (with jokes too. the animal pics worked). we've got all the big hitters in the forum flexing their brain muscles on this now:

so, it looks like you've got a new choice between cato's literal 'Serva spem vivam', Cinefactus's wildcard 'Spes est conservandum', or nohope4u's 'servo spes victus'.

i'm way out of my depth here, and also amazed we've got onto a 3rd page in only 2 days as well. things certainly move fast in the world of latin translation is the main thing i've learned from all this.

as you're our resident expert, what do you think about all this nohope4u?

The thing with latin is that like translating anything into other languages it can get slightly muddled .

I translated exactly what you asked for in the context that I believe you mean .

Its a bit like the bible , everone inteprets it different , but ive not explored , just tramslated it exactly as you said

very true. i have a feeling that your version will win out as far as chemical goes, but we'll see what he thinks.

seeing as we're on a new page, the link for all this is here

just a small update. they're getting quite chatty now. my last post seems to have loosened them up a bit, although it might just have been the pic of the horse and a cat sharing a precious moment. who knows?

Cinefactus has, for reason known only to himself (he was pissed?), decided to change his suggested idea, so the final 'beauty parade' of contestants is now:

cato - 'Serva spem vivam', (keep hope alive)

Cinefactus - 'Spes est conservanda' (Hope must/should be kept intact)

nohope4u - 'servo spes victus' (keep hope living)

thinking about all this - does it really matter if it's not exactly 100% correct chemical? i mean, will anyone be spending time translating it into their own language? what's it for anyway? (probably the question that should have been asked at the beginning, but it's waaay to late for that now)

i'm guessing it's for a tattoo...

Hi im having trouble finding a suitable word that means whine but i will keep on thinking .

latin nearly always puts the verb at the end of the sentence.

Terribly sorry about the delay, guys. I've been a victim of a shrooming expedition beginning Thursday, ending Saturday and then drinking myself to oblivion with my alumni buddies. Either way, back now so do let me continue:

I'm having a tough time deciding between:

"Serva Spem Vivam" (keep hope alive)

"Servo Spes Victus" (keep hope living)

On the precision issue, jugo, it actually does matter since I'll be wearing it on my back or chest for the rest of my life.

Cepasaccus looks like an evil monk in a badly designed bathrobe.

can't help you on the 'Spem Vivam' versus 'Spes Victus' choice i'm afraid. they're both correct. it's all down to which one you like more. (listen to me. i sound like a latin expert!)

i'd personally probably go for 'servo spes victus' to be honest, just because as you get older and your body changes shape the 'spem' might start looking like 'sperm' (it sorta does to me already). my mate had a dagger tattooed on his arm when he was younger, and when his arms filled out later it just looked like a penis. people are forever asking why he got a cock tattooed on his arm now. :lol:

have a think on it, and let us know which one you decide on. i promised the latinists i'd tell them.

in your absence the topic has moved on to cato (the roman one) and his attitude to carthage. according to cato (the forum member):

I know im bias but I seriously think my translation reads and sounds better . Imagine quoting those words to someone , u can put more emphasis on the sentance and sounds more powerful ,if you get my drift


so chemical where have you decided to have the tat and are you having anything else to accompany the writing or is it going to stand alone.

I would seriously think about what text youir going to have it written in so that its a latin script .

i can remember 'tu est blokix' or something like that. 'you are an idiot'. we had to read some stories about the day to day life of someone called puella and her husband.

wish i'd been into it then, it would have come in well handy for when i needed to get my head round russian.

sorry to interrupt all the latin quotes (this topic is starting to take on a life of its own :)), and get back on topic for a sec.

they just don't know when to quit over there. they're on to page 2 (which doesn't happen often there as you can imagine) and correcting corrections to corrections now, as well as getting confused with who said what. :lol:

the most recent pics i posted seem to have disturbed the new guy who's also joined in. he's just correcting one of their versions that had already been corrected, plus chemical didn't like it, so we can ignore him (and his name 'kmp' has no comedy value whatsoever so he's useless to us), although it does highlight the fact that they've had errors in pretty much every translation they've attempted.

Iynx is still sticking up for the home side by bigging up their choice:
